Mega Mini Album Review: SNSD Gee & Genie (2009)

This is an accompaniment for my TikTok series I'm starting where I deep dive into Girls Generation's discography and rate every album from them. I will be adding extra thoughts here for every song. Here is the Gee Tiktok and the Genie Tiktok. 

Lets start with Gee! ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

Gee ~ 9.5 ~ Tier: Perfect

The song and viral music video that made them the Nation's Girl Group! It's so infectious no matter how much its played. I mean Rolling stone just recently named it the number one best kpop song of all time! I would disagree on it being the very best but it is an undeniable hit.

Way To Go ~ 8.5 ~ Tier: Amazing

So fun! Very cute and inspiring with a rock sound. Has kind of a jpop anime vibe which I love. Taeyeon's little high note near the end slayed.

Dear. Mom ~ 5.5 ~ Tier: Good

It's exactly what you'd expect from the title and it's very sweet. I don't find it too boring of a ballad either. Mothers’ Day anthem <3

Destiny ~ 10 ~ Tier: Masterpiece 

Feels almost Britney Spears or something from that pop era. It's so fun and sassy! I love it a lot. Has two distinct sounds in one and they are both fantastic.

Let’s Talk About Love ~ 7 ~ Tier: Great

Has a retro vibe and is just generally very enjoyable. I like the instrumental a lot too with its twinkly keys and funky beat.

Average Score: 8.1 ~ Tier: Amazing

A really good average for a really good mini album. Even the lowest point is sweet and enjoyable and the high points are really high.

Etude ~ 7 ~ Tier: Great

An interesting song about the group of girls helping another girl get a date by coaching her. It feels very rom com. Its not my favorite but its a nice song. I like it more knowing the lyrics

Girlfriend ~ 8.5 ~ Tier: Amazing

Incrediblely bouncy and adorable and the high notes at the end go hard! The "uli dul-i iss-eul ttaen" part is addictive.

Boyfriend ~ 9.5 ~ Tier: Perfect

The “so many boys wanna give it to me” part is cunty and iconic. I could do with a little less siren but otherwise though I have no complaints. The song is really fun and flirty!

My Child ~ 4 ~ Tier: Okay

This song is generally a pretty forgettable ballad but then theres a random interlude that sounds like they're in a circus for some reason 

One Year Later (Onew & Jessica) ~ 6 ~ Tier: Good

Feels perfect for a drama. A classic K-ballad with an interesting concept of two ex lovers meeting after a year of being broken up. I'm not a huge ballad fan but Jessica does kill it.

Average Score: 7.7 ~ Tier: Amazing

I love the cohesion in the album with having a song called girlfriend and a song called boyfriend. Overall its a good listen and I recommend it. Really I recommend both mini albums. They both are amazing as their tiers imply. Also I’ll be making a playlist with all the Amazing, Perfect, and Masterpiece songs.
