Wolf's Art Share (07/31/2023) - A Ghibli Show, Nostalgia and Boundary Breaking

I decided the format I'm going to do this in is just going to be sharing my art and talking around it, I have thoughts, some of my art will be old or brand new and I'll specify. As always though follow my links if you want to keep up with me.

So last year after selling my art for my second time ever I was invited to provide my art to a shop in the area, I've been sending them pieces ever since. For awhile I had art ready, but I recently started using the shows they tell me about at motivation to create new pieces when I'm stuck. This time around they were having a Ghibli Show and I intended to create 3 pieces but only ended up with 2. I still want to make that third piece.

First piece was themed on Kiki's Delivery Service:

Second piece was themed for Totoro:

They're both artistically styled and colored differently but were overall made with the same process. Even before I transitioned to digital art my method of coloring has always been spontaneous to my mood and the idea I'm trying to get across.

In both of these pieces however I had similar motivations, to be familiar while being still unfamiliar.

There's something with Ghibli art that gets me over time and it's the sense that sometimes the framing and themes tend to get repetitive. Not that it doesn't work - if I see merch of Jiji I buy it, that's my guy. That being said I wanted to challenge myself to make some unique imagery anyways. The framing of the artwork and the poses of the characters are meant to facilitate some familiarity and nostalgia, especially with the ways I chose to color, but still be notably different.

I feel like I succeeded in my own eyes, I'm very happy with these :)
