i dont understand the point of gatekeeping music
The most common form of gatekeeping I’ve seen is bashing people from finding audios/songs because of tiktok, or people that will gatekeep an entire genre because they found out about it before someone else did
it destroys the point of music and why its created/appreciated; It’s not supposed to be a tool of forming a superiority complex or calling people “posers” because someone can’t name specific songs/albums from an enjoyable band. People should be able to listen stuff without doing an entire psychoanalysis on a band because of the fear of being harassed by hardcore listeners.
I also don’t like how people in general care which songs are overrated/underrated, again destroying the point of music. the viewcount/fame of a song shouldn’t fucking matter at all, especially if it’s a song that people can relate/connect to. I’ll even admit I’m an avid listener of “Creep” by radiohead, and even though his fans claim it to be his most overrated song, I really don’t care. It has a nice rhythm and lyrics that connect to me, so I listen to it. If a song speaks to you or makes you convey an emotion, that’s all that matters because that’s what music is supposed to do.
Again, it isn’t a tool to bash other listeners because they’ve heard less songs/albums from a band you like or if they found the band/genre later than you did. The label “fan” shouldn’t need to reach so many expectations and exclude others who are less educated on a band’s other productions and music
but I’ll accept any counter-arguments in the comments, just don’t start crying about it pls thanks

I mostly agree with you, the one thing Ill challenge you on is what you consider a "fan" to be. Might just be some personal stuff, but when I say I would like to befriend fellow fans of a band, I would like for them to know a good chunk of their material, thats not saying you shouldnt be allowed to only enjoy the popular songs by an artist, but I swear if I hear one more person say their favourite Green Day song is "I walk alone" I will start throwing hands.

truee it’s a lot better talking to someone who knows a lot about the band(s) they like; it definitely makes more interesting convos + can potentially teach the other person things they didn’t know about the band

i agree. i like it when artists or music i like gets popular, because it may result in other people getting into producing that sort of music. meaning: bam! plenty more playlist additions. plus, if you're in on it early, nothing beats the feeling of sending a playlist of niche goodies to someone who's just starting to get into the genre. music is meant to be shared!
