Punch Up Theory (Fiction)

Punch Up Theory

Punch Up Theory is an axiomatic concept within Fiction that I utilize in my current META. Although a presupposition, I have arguments to back this ideology up (see examples).

The concept is meant to explain how a character may be able to defeat another character that is out of their league in terms of deadliness.

The Theory: Movesets and abilities allow some characters to defeat others who they would otherwise have no chance of beating.

What this means: Not all character fights are black and white. Not all A, B, C logic is rational when comparing deadliness and/or power levels.

My Examples:

  1. Kid Obito: Obito Uchiha has a strange combination of intagibility, multiple one shot maneuvers, illusionary tactics, and advanced time perception that allow him to compete, simultaniously, against all of Konoha including Hokage Minato and 60 Year Old Hiruzen, both of which show better physical prowess and tactical soundness than Obito.
  2. Danzo: Danzo Shimura has an arsenal that consists of many default Naruto moves and death evasion. It is his death evasion that allows him to tire out characters like Taka Sasuke, who is shown to blatanetly outshine Danzo in DPS, tactical soundess, and scale (see Scale Theory in my blog).
Luna's Examples:
  1. Negi vs Jack Rakan: Negi, user of the powerful mystical ability known as Magia Erebea, was basically only capable of keeping up with the invincible Jack Rakan due to his ability to absorb and stack Jack’s immense Ki on top of his own strength using Magia Erebea’s ability to absorb mystical energy, AND, more importantly, due to the extensive amount of prep-time he took to mitigate every advantage that Rakan possessed, especially concerning the development of multiple techniques, specifically designed for the fight— including his ability to turn himself into an intangible living lightning spirit.
  2. Goku and Piccolo Vs Raditz: Goku and Piccolo were definitely physically inferior to Raditz in every statistic, but it was because they possessed greater Ki control and the ability to magnify their Spirit Energy beyond Raditz’ strength and deal precise damage via specifically crafted offensive techniques. The piercing power of the Special Beam Cannon made for an especially lethal attack that works on foes with similar power.

What this really means: Fictional characters are fluid in deadliness and are not always two dimensional in power level and tactic.
