murakami's norwegian wood sux

i read norwegian wood and it sucked dick so bad. emm short rant and spoilers

mc was boring af i did not understand how he managed to fuck almost every single character with a vagina. it almost felt like murakamis own self-insert fanfic where he gets to do it with a bunch of mentally ill women. it didnt feel justified. besides the mc being a boring horny mf, he was also sexist which made it hard to continue reading since hes surrounded by women the whole time so its not like its ez to escape. also i dont think that was by choice - atp it seems like thats just how murakami sees women and that just bled into the characters too lol.

i just was disappointed bc a book with themes of mental health and dealing/coping with loss and grief and loneliness all intertwined with love sounded so promising. reading it though was weird bc for example after every block of text with words spoken by a woman explaining something so relatable (regardless of how deep/superficial it was), the mc would either respond like the dryest texter on earth ("uh-huh", "sure", "maybe", "okay"), OR there would be just another completely unnecessary sexual scene -_- JUST STOP

now about the ending HIM FUCKING A WRINKLY WOMAN WHO WAS HIS DEAD "GFS"(?) FRIEND ALSO DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE HOW DOES HE GET AWAY WITH IT AND THEN HE WENT ON TO CHASE THE 1 MANIC PIXIE DREAM GIRL THAT WAS LEFT FOR HIM OMFG STFU i hate him sm i hope that was obvious

i never read norwegian wood but i have read a few of his other books and yeah the unnecessary sexual scenes never stop, as well as nailing old women. in kafka on the shore, the mc is 15 and still also fucking every female character around him, even (symbolically?) his own estranged sister and mother? twice? i love the surrealism in murakamis works but yeah it does reek of a twisted hyper sexual self insert fanfiction no matter what he's writing about lmfao
