so i didnt expect
this to drop today, but it did. thanks to aidan for messaging me about
it. due to it being MOTHER i naturally have... a *lot* to say about it,
so lets get into it
this demo was
amazing! it only takes about an hour and a half to get through- its all
the way up until the first magicant entrance, but the quality of whats
on display here is amazing. before i say anything else, i have to give
kudos to the sprite art because holy SHIT is
it beautiful. this is a full recreation of the original world of MOTHER
1, taking inspiration from 2 and 3 a lot, but with its own flavor as
well. there’s in battle animations for your party members when they
take actions like attacking/guarding/PSI and it changes based
on the weapon you have equipped; which is such a cool detail, i love
when games do something like that. even pippi, who’s in your party for
all of maybe 15 minutes, has her own set of unique animations which are
adorable.

the new sprite art
for enemies alongside their unique battle backgrounds scream MOTHER. im
a sucker for well done sprite art, especially the sprite work shown in
the MOTHER series, and this demo already inspires confidence that the
artists know what theyre doing.
the dialogue is also
full of that charm that the original series had, which i feel like is
something so many people try to recreate but fail

mechanically, the
game feels great. battles are like M2, so theres no sound battles. for
the first few battles i kept tapping Z to the music thinking itd do more
damage, but i eventually got used to it. the usual MOTHER
mechanics are here- rolling HP, PSI, and ninten now has unique skills to
make up for his lack of offensive PSI (the only one available in this
demo though was seemingly just curveball, an attack that hits all
enemies). it doesnt seem like
the buff PSI in the demo works just yet, though? you can learn them just
fine, but using them just increases your stats by 0.

the overworld
exploration feels most like M3, with a dash that you can either hold
sprint and the arrow keys to do, or do it classic style by holding then
letting go of sprint. sprinting into enemies when youre a high enough
level also takes them out. once you get a certain item, you can also
jump across designated points of the world like across boulders or off
platforms. additionally, ninten now can use a bat (though its one that
you cant actually equip as a weapon) to break certain objects in the
overworld like branches or
barrels, allowing you to get items or progress further, which was really
cool. you can also use it to get a preemptive strike on enemies, which
deals some damage right on the overworld before transitioning to battles
the dungeon present
in the demo, the graveyard caves (which was much larger than the single
room it is in the original game) showed off overworld hazards as well as
the new mechanic of keys which hasnt been done in the series before
its exciting to know
that theyre going to be expanding on the original caves and dungeons
that M1 had to such a degree. hopefully duncan’s factory is like.
actually good this time (fun fact, ive never completed a full
playthrough of M1. i always lose steam at duncan’s factory)
oh, and the music and
sound design is beautiful! ONE OF THE TRACKS EVEN REFERENCES THE
TAZMILY VILLAGE THEME FROM EB64 AND MY MONKEY BRAIN LOST IT FOR A MOMENT
the only gripes i
have with it so far- and im tempering myself here because i know its a
demo and things have time to be fixed- is some grammatical errors in
like 3 spots, the lack of sound battles from M3 again, and some looping
errors with the music in maybe 2 spots.
i also found
inventory space to quickly become a problem, but i was used to that.
other than that i have no other notes, the demo was so promising to me
as a MOTHER fan. maybe ill go back and finish M1 for real some time
soon...

ALSO WTF

I'll have to give it a try, I saw it on the mother direct stream, really love how it looked!
There's more mother projects that are being worked on, but it'll take a while to wait for them to get finished :(
yeah, thats the curse of being a MOTHER fan...you gotta be super patient when it comes to fan projects
