xav's 2023 media thread- Persona 5 Royal (2020/2022)

oh boy here we go.

so after 2 years, 9 months, 10 days, and 3 different purchases of the game (bought it day 1 digitally because i was impatient and started it there, bought the PS4 steelbook, bought the collectors edition on switch)...we’re here. and what do i have to say for myself?

i already loved persona 5 AS IS back when i played and beat it in 2017-18 and this takes everything that i enjoyed from that initial experience and only turns it up to 11. i love every single addition, fix, tweak, rewrite they made to the game. its no secret i hold P3FES in a special part of my heart, and P5R comes damn near close to topping it just from the third semester alone. due to the recent rerelease + the fact i have several friends playing it for the first time, im VERY hesitant to get into specifics about what it is i loved about it so im speaking very cautiously and in general terms here- maybe one day ill go into it all with a ROT13 megapost or something- but dear GOD is the third semester a 10/10 in every way.

i will at least say this: the third semester poses honest philosophical questions that the vanilla P5 never did and was lacking for it. even now, as i write this, im doing a lot of thinking about what the antagonist posits and to what degrees i can find fault with their motives. and this is something you never actually really DO in vanilla 5 because the villains are all admittedly so...straightforward? "yo he’s really bad, go steal his shit".

with the exception of *one*. and said character gets entirely reworked in royal into being 10x better so lol

ALSO UNRELATED BUT. HIM. HIIIIIIM. THIS FUCKING GUY MY GOAT TAKUTO MARUKI OHHH MY GOD I LOVE HIM SO MUCH BOTH FROM A PSYCH STUDENT PERSPECTIVE AND JUST A GENERAL VIEW. ACTUALLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS IN FICTION I AM DEADASS

honestly with P5R being directed by daiki ito instead of hashino, im filled with so much confidence in the idea of a persona 6 if the third semester is what can come from that. its genuinely exciting to see and i have a lot of faith. also hashino’s kind of a weirdo so yknow. ill go ahead and end this segment here. even now i dont know if i fully expressed how i feel about the game; its hard to between twitter’s character limit and being wary of spoiling things. but i hope i conveyed a piece of my love for it, because i really, REALLY loved P5R

although they did reference the salt bae meme in the game so i think its shit actually nvm
