alternative social media

hi hi. said i'd make a thing. i'm making the thing. let's goooooo-

a non-exhaustive list of alt social media

additions in the comments welcome!

tumblr: is it perfect? hell no. is it one of the more popular options rn? yes. you'll find anything and everything here if you know where to look, just remember to reblog things (ESPECIALLY IF IT'S ART) and remember that staff's on dumb shit, so have the feedback page at the ready. you can make sideblogs for different things and send asks + dms to other users. i live there.

mastodon: one of the more popular twitter alternatives by far. less accessible for most since everything runs off individual servers and a lot of people are turned off by the idea of mods being able to read dms, but it's an option. it's kind of like if twitter, discord, and reddit got caught in some lab accident and fused. give it a shot if that sounds like your thing!

spacehey: you're here! it's a myspace clone but better. we like html and minding our own business. pretty chill, just heed dnis if present and don't get caught up in discourse, just block. there's blogging, forums, and auto-deleting bulletins for more personal posts.

neocities: you know carrd? neocities is better. you can do literally anything possible in html/css, which is pretty much anything. you get a bunch of storage space to do anything with for free, plus a lot more if you support the site, but it's totally optional and you don't miss out on anything if you don't! add guestbooks, host your art, lay out things any way you want, ect ect. please make a neocities. even if you don't know how to use html/css (and it's honestly super easy if you have the time to learn), templates exist. check tumblr for those!

inkblot: idk much about it honestly. apparently it's a good deviantart alternative if you don't want to use tumblr to post art? they don't allow ai art, so that's a bonus.

artstation: honorable mention to artstation. it's popular for professional artists and while it does allow ai art, it allows you to opt out of having your art used in ai databases.

blips.club: basically a recreation of twitter from 2009! make your silly little posts and revel in having nobody you know see it because it's more obscure. for now. pretty neat, i'll be looking into it more.

dreamwidth: remember the old livejournal layout? yeah, another recreation site! "old web was better" seems to be the moral of the day. but yeah, you can write/journal here. neat stuff.
