hai!! uhhhhh wednesday is basically the start of the week right? anyway here's some albums i listened to last week!
Kitchen - Town
this one is kind of a cheat since i listened to this album a lot back in middle school, but my music tastes have changed a lot since then so i was interested to see if i'd still be into it nowadays.
turns out i still really love this album. peak lo-fi comfy sadboy chord organ indie folk core type shiz. all the plastic-y casio keyboards contrasting against the acoustic instruments, combined with James' sleepy, monotone vocals just tickle a specific part of my brain. the sound of this thing was already nostalgic in and of itself but even more so now that i have actual nostalgic memories connected to it. check out "hill house", "november prayer" or "sputnik / piece of light" for a feel of what the album is going for.
Lights - Siberia
i really loved like half of this album, the rest was pretty forgettable to me, at least on a first listen. the title track is of course the highlight here. i have a huge soft spot for early 2010s electropop and that's exactly what this is. i love how a lot of the songs are slightly distorted, it makes the sound of the album stand out from all the other electropop records released around the same time. apart from the title track the song "heavy rope" also stood out to me. i love the percussion on this track and the vocal melody is absolutely wonderful, almost lullaby-esque.
Kurt Cobain - Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings
yeah, i know im a white boy, dont bully me i'll dissolve or something. i like nirvana a lot, ok!! in spite of that i held off on listening to montage of heck because i'm really morally opposed to this compilation even being released. posthumous releases are often ethically iffy but the fact that these tracks were only ever meant to be private demos and experiments makes me kinda disgusted. but since i pirated the album i can keep my sense of moral superiority while getting to listen to the whole album >:3c (why would anyone wanna have a cake without being able to eat it too, i dont get it?????)
anyway, i kinda really like a lot of this thing. a lot of stuff could of course have been cut- some songs are basically unintelligible because of the nonexistent mixing, and others are so far from finished that you forget them before they're even over. but other tracks are really really dope. the "and i love her" cover is of course a standout track, other than that "the yodel song", "sappy", "letter to frances" and "do re mi" are really good. some of the really strange and dumb tracks like "beans", "sea monkeys" and the "montage of kurt" sound collages are a lot of fun too. one track i found myself enjoying more than expected is "aberdeen" which is basically four minute audiobook that feels like something straight outta gummo.
Tessa Violet - My God!
i was really disappointed by this album :(
tessa violet's last album "bad ideas" is one of my favorite modern pop albums so i was super excited when she announced this new album. i really liked two of the singles- "breakdown" and "you are not my friend" and yeah, they turned out to be the best on the album. i however really wasn't into "my god" and "bad bitch", which are more akin to the sound of the album overall. most of these songs flew by without me really remembering anything about them, others i couldn't stand at all. one of the only non-single songs i liked was "song without a title", mainly because of the almost boom bap-adjacent drums.
and that's all for this week! let's hope that this week's album picks will be more interesting than some of the ones last week!
adios, goodbye, aloha and ha det gött and all that!
