memories (poem)

Your heart is empty and hollow.

Like an empty room.

Filled with loneliness and the past memories that now leave stale dreams.

The fragrance of what once was has just passed on, just barely missing you.

You are now left with a muddied collection of scents.

Through the kaleidoscope of smells you can pick out certain ones.

The smell of her hair.

Old books.

The candle that she bought for you.

The cat food.

You tear up as you stand in the empty room trying so desperately to relive what has happened here.

But the attempt is futile.

No matter how hard you try, relieving the memories you love will only bring you pain and disappointment.

You must try to simply live with and embrace all memories no matter what they have inflicted on You.

Pain, happiness, sorrow.

You must take those emotions and embrace them.

Embrace how they are shaping you as a person.

You must move forward.

You take a deep breath and scan the room once more.

You feel a tear run down your cheek.

A warmth surrounds your eyes.

Although you must leave this place there is more out there for you.

More memories to make.

More emotions to embrace.
