omg okay this really hurt to narrow down to just one(ish) track per decade

1910s - We're Goin' Around by scott joplin, from his opera Treemonisha! had to pick a joplin piece, but most of his popular work like his ragtimes were written pre-1910s, so they dont count :P

1920s - Makin' Whoopee by eddie cantor - it just entered the public domain this year!
(i know u said one per, but Prove It On Me Blues by ma rainey i just Have to put here too, i love that one)

1930s - (Hep Hep) the Jumpin' Jive by cab calloway <3 i love calloway so much (i would also put forth st james infirmary as an alt choice B])

1940s - Jingle Jangle Jingle by kay kyser, which ill admit i first heard playing fallout but i think its so charming!

1950s - Shout pts 1 & 2 by the isley brothers, which is just infectious in its energy (i also HAVE to suggest I Put a Spell On You by screamin' jay hawkins because its just so perfectly sinister <3)

1960s - I'm a Man by the chicago transit authority - this is getting so hard to narrow down bc i listen to much music from the 50s onwards, but i must resist! this track is just legendaryyyyy rock

1970s - Got To Be Real by cheryl lynn, which is maybe the best disco track of all time??? a lot of my favourite albums/artists are from the 70s, so its hard to narrow down just one song i like from them, whereas this track is truely a standout work

1980s - Bizarre Love Triangle by new order! the amount of music i was faced for the 80s is about double what i had for the 70s, so i was nearly tearing my hair out lolol but this alt-synth track was the winner

1990s - Goodbye Horses by q lazzarus, an alternative hit which was my top song of last year lol! its so gorgeous

2000s - This Modern Love by bloc party - infinitely dancable and nostalgic alternative track, makes me a little emotional ngl

2010s - Immaterial by SOPHIE - maybe the best dance track of the decade??? her production was always immaculate

2020s - Good Luck, Babe! by chappell roan, which is also a really new track that im just obsessed with right now, her voice is incredible and its really fun string-backed pop

alternate choices (because i cant leave well enough alone lol)

80s - no sign of yesterday by men at work

00s - together for one last dance by junior senior

too much music in the world!

by Jude; ; Report

One of the few to kick it back to 1910s!

I'll have to listen to your most recent four the older stuff on your list are already old favorites

But Treemonisa??? I am proud of your knowledge of Joplin! And your first recommend for Calloway is Jumpin' Jive? It's such a great tune!

You mention that 50s onward is hard to narrow down and I agree! But it's like there's this hard line between pre and post rock eras that there is SO much great music that is now mostly forgotten! Although I never took to video games, I am SO HAPPY that games like Fallout have dug up some great old music. Keep diving into the 30s and 40s beyond Fallout (as it seems you already do!) There's just so much music in the world that it's heartbreaking to think I'll only get a chance to hear such a small portion of it.

I'll check back in on those newer recommendations after work. Thank you!

1950s. Day By Day - The Four Freshmen (vocal jazz, quartet)

1960s. Sandy - Ronny & The Daytonas (surf) / There Is Nothing More To Say - The Millennium (sunshine pop, baroque pop)

1970s. The Night Was So Young - The Beach Boys (synthpop) Love You is one of my favourite albums, but it feels oddly embarrassing to recommend a song of it.

1980s. Don't Talk To Strangers - Rick Springfield (pop) три коло́дца - Yalla (Uzbek folk rock-ish)

2010s. humain à l'eau - Stromae (electropop)

I'm sure you've already listened to most of these, but I found this a really fun prompt and really wanted to fill it in :D

You know why I love this blog post of mine?

Because folks like you can post songs that I DON'T know! Even when I'm familiar with the artists!

I think only the Rick Springfield song was one where I went "Oh, yeah, I know this tune already". And that surprised me about the Beach Boys tune I could place

I dig hearing stuff like Yalla for the first time! And as for Stromae? Electronic is pretty outside of my usual tastes, but this tune was a vibe!

Thank you!

I like many 2000s artists and songs. At that time my favourite was DJ Alligator (aka DJ Alligator project). I still like him and his old songs. Also Jennifer Lopez 2000s songs. And many many more….

Report Comment

I'll have to check out DJ Alligator. I already know Jennifer Lopez, of course.

by Cranky Old Witch; ; Report

JLo is amazing. DJ Alligator is techno music, so maybe you won’t like it, but that was my kind of music at that time))

by Kalissa Quinn; ; Report

Techno is not my 'go-to', but the point is for me to hear music I DON'T know as much about or normally listen to

by Cranky Old Witch; ; Report

In that case I’m interested in your opinion about Alligator

by Kalissa Quinn; ; Report

I've just listened to his songs "The Whistle Song" and "Stomp!"

Admittedly, I am ay a loss to give any sort of intelligent comment on techno, as it is fairly remote from my usual tastes. As I gather, it is sincerely the beat that drives everything and mostly for purpose of dancing!

In this way, techno reminds me of the trance like nature of a decent drum circle, and it's more the experience itself that is key. Tribal, participatory, and experiential.

For me personally, I liked that he was sampling some well-known old 'whistle' tunes in both tracks, and in Stomp! particularly, his use of the "River Kwai" theme. More than sampling the whistling tune, he dropped the beat a bit to give the sing a bit more shifting dynamics.

But as I say, I am a poor commentator! What are YOUR thoughts on DJ Alligator and his work?

by Cranky Old Witch; ; Report

Wow! You should be a music commentator 👍🏻 great comment!
Well, I was a fan of his music, my favourite songs were “Bounce 2 this”, “Davaj, davaj”, “lollipop” and “calling out your name” (chill song). I liked the simplicity of words and music tempo. At that time I loved to dance and I was often visited clubs, so this was the right music for me

by Kalissa Quinn; ; Report

Lol, I actually have a degree in music education that I'm not currently using for any good purpose

I was somewhere between a dirty hippy and a lil metalhead different experience

by Cranky Old Witch; ; Report

You really should be a music commentator👍🏻 When I read your comment I was just like “wow, that’s a great music review”

Well that's nice to know!

A lot of the music I listen to is post punk, primarily more modern stuff such as Molchat Doma (if that can be considered post punk?), however I've started listening to electronic too, such as music made by Perturbator.

I tend to listen to older stuff (no, older than that lol)

So updating what I know of punk helps, and I've only scratched the surface for electronic.

by Cranky Old Witch; ; Report

I wasn't really here nor there on Kino - but his voice is dark and broody in a cool way

The Croation tune is cool and has an 80s pop-metal vibe. I happened to find it with English lyrics, so I think there's a historical/patriotic context here that make me want to dig deeper into the band, the sing, and the times.

I couldn't find "Voyager" is the song titled "Venger"? I listened to that, and it was a better groove as the song went along that I thought it was going to be

Thank you so much for sharing these songs with me!

by Cranky Old Witch; ; Report

Nah it's titled Voyager, here's the link;

Also my bad that's not Perturbator. But Petrurbator makes some good shit.
The 90s one is a patriotic song about the Yugoslav wars, specifically the Croatian Homeland war. However it's not the "We will kick your ass" type, it's the "My country will survive, and it'll prosper".

I'm glad you liked seru giran! They were very important for the evolution of rock in Latin America.

and Fother Muckers were part of a great indie music movement in Chile in the 2000s. Then they evolved into another band called Ases Falsos...they rock too! I recommend you listen to the album called Juventud Americana

charly garcia on TOP!!!! but i was reading your replies and, between all the good bands from Chile you decided to recommend Ases Falsos? If we talk about quality and influence they are just very famous in the indie scene but I would say they are a little bit overrated :/

by pia; ; Report

Okay, Pia. Who should I check out instead?

by Cranky Old Witch; ; Report

Well, that depends on the type of music you like tbh
Los Tres have this amazing mix between jazz-rock-chilean folklore
Victor Jara is one of the greatest and influenced many artists from Chile, he made chilean folklore and was a part of the movement of "New Chilean Song" relatde to leftist movements, sadly he got tortured and killed in 1973, when the dictatorship started, his songs were related to the proletarian movement. (If you like Victor Jara you will def love Violeta Parra, Margot Loyola, Illapu, Inti-Illimani, Quilapayun, Los Jaivas)
If you like something more alternative and shoegaze, you have Lucybell and Saiko, both very important bands that represent how music was going to a more experimental side after the dictatorship
The most famous band from Chile is Los Prisioneros, they had a punk sound during the 80s but their latest albums were more like synthpop (and a rap song lol)
About the indie scene, you can listen to Pedropiedra, Diego Lorenzini, Alex Anwandter, Natalia Montenegro
There are many other but Ases Falsos is not something I would recommend to someone who want to get to know more music, without mentioning that Cristobal Briceño (the vocalist) is an ephebophile

by pia; ; Report

hehe yeah charly garcia is really on top
and answering your reply well i don't listen so much chilean music from the 2000s and 2010s and juventud americana is a recent discovering that i really like
I don't know much indie music but if you have any recommendations, I'll listen to them ;)

by Weirdtoshi; ; Report

its okay, I replied with some other artists in another comment, after all, recommending chilean music to the world is always valid !!

by pia; ; Report

It's not Chilean music especially that I'm looking for, but since I've never really listened to it, I'm thrilled to explore!

Also, less about what I like, and more about what I have yet to hear :)

My list is growing, so I am WELL PLEASED!

I'll try to give as much variation as I can, but as you'll see I have a strong bias towards alternative rock. I have to start in the '60s since I don't really listen to stuff older than that.

1960s
The Doors- Twentieth Century Fox (Classic Rock)

Normally this type of rock music isn't really my style due to the dated sound, but the doors do it so well, probably because of the organ and Jim Morrison's incredible voice. This is one of my favorites on the album.

1970s
Black Sabbath-War Pigs/Luke's Wall (Heavy Metal)

8 minutes of heavy metal perfection. Sabbath's anti-war anthem managed to master metal music right out of the gates. I have no other words than "listen to it".

1980s
Bauhaus- God In An Alcove (Goth/ Death-Rock)

This is a deep cut from their first album, In The Flat Field. I love that entire album, but this song in particular sticks out to me. The vocal delivery and dark themes both cement it as an underrated goth classic.

1990s
Nine Inch Nails- Reptile (Industrial)

This song is seven minutes long, but feels more like four. It has just the right amounts of industrial, hard rock, and horror. While best heard in the context of the album, the general meaning can still be gleamed from a single listen.

2000s
Cancer- My Chemical Romance (Alt-Rock)

I'm shocked as to how this was not a single. One of the sadder songs on The Black Parade, which really says something. Truly a beautiful, heart-wrenching ballad.
2010s
Pool House- The Backseat Lovers (Indie Rock)

If you haven't felt like singer Joshua Harmon at least once in your life, you're lying to yourself. This song about loneliness and pining helped me through hard times, and I'm sure that in a few decades The Backseat Lovers will be remembered fondly as one of the greatest indie rock bands of all time.

2020s
Pass the Nirvana- Pierce The Veil (Emo)

After a seven-year hiatus, Pierce the Veil decide to experiment by mixing emo-rock with the grunge sound that dominated the 90s. What resulted was a masterpiece, not only providing an anthem for the bruised youth of today, but also giving them motivation to continue.

Thank you! I'm pretty familiar with most of it, but I'll be refreshing myself on a couple of these later today.

Thank you so much for helping me!

Had a bit more time this morning than I thought.

Popped on Bauhaus. I know them a bit, but couldn't quite place the song. Yeah, wow it was a trip down memory lane! Been too long since I've listened to Bauhaus!

Then it was Pierce the Veil. Pretty cool Bit of a post-punk sound to my ears.

Thank you again!

Oops! Nearly missed Pool House! Great tune, lot of soul in his voice

Btw, so happy tou took the time to write just a bit WHY you like these tunes as well!

Oh, and about Black Sabbath. This is just one of those anathematic songs as relevant today as the moment it was recorded.

Try this ... Put on the album. And think of it as an unintentional rock opera. It wasn't intended that way, but think of the 'feel' of the tracks as they play as telling a story even if every lyric doesn't fit.

1. "War Pigs" - a soldier's mind breaking from the direct experience of warfare in Vietnam
2. "Paranoid" - His cries for help as he's taken off the line and still in the midst of a psychotic break
3. "Planet Caravan" - now heavily drugged, and being in a military hospital for gods know how long, he's being flown home
4. "Iron Man" - He comes home and experiences apathy or wholescale rejection where he thought to be welcomed home like a hero for his service. (this was one of the most messed up things that actually happened to servicemen returning from Vietnam)
5. "Electric Funeral" - He experiences persistent flashbacks of the destruction, fueling his fears of impending nuclear war, societal breakdown, etc.
6. "Hand of Doom" - He turns to heroine, as he has no real meaningful treatment options (this is also quite literal from what Black Sabbath were seeing amongst wounded US soldiers passing through England ultimately headed home)
7. "Rat Salad" instrumental
8. "Fairies Wear Boots" He continues to suffer the combined effects of drugs and severe pstd.

Glad you liked these! When I have some free time I'll have to listen to Paranoid again, I can never hear it the same way! Thank you!

Thank you! On it!

Side note: I love Haley's "Shake Rattle and Roll", but highly recommend Big Joe Turner's original :)

Dang, I haven't listened to Bathory since the 80s, time to catch up!

Thank you so much!

thanks, i'll be sure to check it out!
bathory is fantastic! i'd recommend the album blood on ice, seriously one of my favorite albums ever

Mountain Greenery - what a fun obscure track!

Synergy - I needed this. Been struggling just a bit on people's recommendations on modern synth genres. This might be the link I needed from late 60s Moog and todays synthwave type stuff. Much obliged!

When the Lights Go Out - Oh, wow. I remember this song! Back in the 80s this stuff really wasn't my jam. While I still struggle to appreciate it, I'm a lot more open to it in my old age. Thank you!

sins of the flesh - synth stuff in general was never really my thing, but I dig this one so much more! Not my go to, but industrial is a jam, and I've been sleeping on it! Great tune!

Broken Swords - it may be updated, but wow this takes me back to my youth :D

cross of lorraine - oh, now this is cool. I'll becoming back to them, I think

broken fingers - ooo, fairly new (duh), I'll have to delve a bit more, but the sound very much reminds me of the goth stuff from the 80s.

Thank you so very much! Doubly, I am impressed that at 15 you pulled out gems as far back as the 50s of DIFFERENT genres! So pleased to hear some sounds unknown to me!

by Cranky Old Witch; ; Report

i'm glad you enjoyed most of them!! my music taste has 0 consistency lol

to be honest i really didn't like electronic music before i heard synergy, modern stuff just doesn't sound as colorful. but synergy? that is my JAM
highly underrated band

Speaking as someone in her fifties, you keep reaching out for more genres! More music! More sounds you might not have heard!

There're hundreds of years of written music, and about 130 years of recorded music. All over the world in styles we've never dreamed of. My heart ACHES that even if I listen to something different EACH TIME for the rest of my life, I won't even get to hear 1% of it.

There's no 'bad' music, really. Just music you like more and music you like less, but ALL of it is deeply valuable!

it's truly so sad that there's so much music out there that we'll never get to listen to. i'm always looking for new stuff so i can enjoy as much of it as i can! maybe you could give me some recs? :]

by binky; ; Report

Would love to. I'm more of a 'roots' person, rather than an electronic person. I'm usually chasing down origins of things. Since you left the early decades blank, what a song for each? Or maybe something else? Where do your ears want to go? More 'intellectual' or more 'emotional'?

by Cranky Old Witch; ; Report

early decades sounds good, also anything from the 80s! other than that, i haven't much of a preference. whatever you want to give me :]

Okay! 1910s are a bit rough, but 20s, 30s, 40s are good to go!

If I give a link for something you already know, let me know and I'll find another.

1916 - Scott Joplin - Maple Leaf Rag -ragtime
This is not an audio recording. No audio recordings exist of Joplin, but this is a piano roll he physically created in 1916
https://youtu.be/SGk7_Z9dfyw

1927 - Blind Willie Johnson - Dark was the night, Cold was the ground - blues/gospel
In the 1970s, NASA sent this song out on a space probe along with some of the world's greatest music. For this song, they hoped that if aliens ever do encounter it, it might help them understand the human emotion of 'loneliness'
https://youtu.be/V8AuYmID4wc

1937 - Benny Goodman (Gene Krupa on drums) - Sing Sing Sing - swing
Those drums, man! This song has been studied by every drummer sing, FAR into the rock and roll era in hopes that they may learn to play as well

Two for the 1940s. During the war, and after the war. Big changes.

1942 - Elton Britt - There's a star spangled banner waving somewhere - Hillbilly ('country' was called 'Hillbilly' in those days, didn't change to 'country' until a few years later)
WWII song about a crippled man desperate to join so he can serve his country. Both dark and patriotic. There's a million WWII songs, but I figure you've already heard songs like 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"
https://youtu.be/JwPRR2A3DN8

1948 - Wynonie Harris - There's Good Rocking Tonight - Rock and Roll
Among the first rock and roll songs recorded. It existed for years earlier, but really wasn't starting to be recorded until the late 40s. The lyrics are a LITANY of characters from earlier songs that kind of detail the formation of rock and roll.

thank you so much, these are all so good!! i really love late 40s-50s rock and roll, it's so charming. i also miss the common use of brass instruments

I had don't a multipart blog on the development of rock and roll, if you liked that song, check out parts 3, 4, and 5. Even if you don't care to read the overly long blog post, there's a play list at the bottom of each. Each playlist is about a dozen songs
