THOUGHTS ON BARBIE [7/20/23]

[SPOILER FREE]

Barbie 2023 Dir. Greta Gerwig

Watched on 7/20/23

it feels like forever since i first learned about greta gerwig's barbie. I remember the only two confirmed cast members were margot robbie and ryan gosling at the time and all i could think about was how awesome the movie was going to be.

i'm a huge greta gerwig fan. lady bird was the first movie i watched that made me want to go into filmmaking. with lady bird and little women, gerwig captures womanhood effortlessly, and barbie is no exception.

there are so many things that i would like to say about barbie. the production design was phenomenal, the acting was amazing (obv), and the messages that gerwig put into the movie are so very important and executed fantastically. i held back my tears for the majority of the movie, but the ending had me sobbing as it built up to that moment in just the right way.

most of the hype surrounding this movie sheds a big spotlight onto ryan gosling, and boy does he deserve it!! i think that his character was written perfectly and he fit right into the story to serve a very important purpose. "im just ken" is a song that i haven't been able to stop thinking about since it was released.

overall this review is short because i feel like i need to watch it a thousand times over to fully articulate my feelings. one thing is for sure, i loved it and im so glad im alive in this time to enjoy greta gerwigs work.
