In a previous century, growing up in Milwaukee (and a suburb thereof) there were a couple of local bottlers that made "white soda". It was totally clear, containing only carbonated water and cane sugar (sucrose). No flavoring at all.
When we were sick our parents would recommend a small glass of white soda, allowed to warm up from the fridge, and saltine crackers. It helped.
