yuri recs from the yuri queen (me)

as of the 17th of july 2023, these are my top 5 yuri manga & webtoon recommendations:

1. yuri de naru♥espoir

by naoi mai

After finding out she is to be forced into a marriage of convenience as soon as she graduates high school, Kokoro sees her life ending before her eyes at her father's wishes. And so in her final year of high school, she decides to indulge in her love of other women, and create an incredible sketchbook of lesbian romance to leave behind as her legacy. As she observes the young women of her town, she learns more about their desires, their struggles, and the unpredictable whims of love.’

this may be my all time favourite manga ever. absolutely beautiful look at all kinds of relationships between women & girls of all ages, not always limited to traditional romance. the plot is ADDICTIVE and i have (attempted to) encourage many of my friends to read it.

there are however some very serious topics examined, so if theres something in particular that you may want to avoid, try and find a trigger list. off the top of my head, i know that there are themes of forced marriage (throughout, unavoidable), suicide (in one chapter only, can be avoided), sexual harassment (was very brief & can be avoided) and some very bad parenting (made me cry).

2. get out of my house! (18+)

by team aemae

’Cha Hong just got her dream job, assistant director on the set of a real TV series! This show stars the nation’s top actress, Noh Seung-ah, so cool! But when the director’s relationship with Seung-ah reaches a boiling point, he recruits Hong to keep watch over her 24/7 so she doesn’t ruin his precious show! But this young diva is not interested in being told what to do. Plus, keeping an eye on her actually means…they have to live together?! Is trying to tame this wildcard going to drive her insane and make her run for the exits or will the experienced Hong have some of her own tricks up her sleeve...?’

this webtoon is currently on hiatus, but when i say that i was FERAL for it when it was releasing…. i was sneaking to the bathroom during family dinners when i saw new chapters were released.

it might not have the best plot or the most well developed characters but loved reading it and that’s what matters.

warning for an age gap, but both characters are adults (over 25).

3. ikemen girl to hakiori musume

by mochi au lait & majoccoid

‘Ooguma Satomi has never been in a relationship. One day, she fell in love with a handsome younger boy in her class, without knowing that he... is actually a girl.’

its only issue is that its only 13 chapters long. something this good should be at least 50.

apart from that its delicious. i reread whenever something goes slightly wrong in my life and it makes everything better every time without fail. very relatable if you as a reader are a stupid femme with a thing for delinquent looking mascs.

4. naneun amy-reul saranghae

by eonni

‘Bibi is obsessed with Peter, the prince of the school. When she spots Amy next to him, she starts to feel jealous. She invites Amy to her house to warn her, but instead takes a liking to the girl. They agree to be friends on the condition that Amy has to help Bibi confess.’

*incoherant screaming*

i never ever thought i would enjoy a yandere. never ever. and then bibi came along…

this is lovely. i loved it. its so unserious and serious at the same time. has the most incredible artstyle ive seen in a long time, as well as a well paced plot - nothing felt forced and the characters felt genuine. wonderful.

warnings for child abuse (STRONG THEMES!!!!!!) and violence (STRONG AGAIN!!!!) and a psychopath-leaning main character

5. catch these hands!

by murata

‘From back alley brawls to bashful bonds, two former-delinquents face their next fight: long-term relationships. During her high school years, Takebe was the top dog at her school. But with her old friends now living as happy adults, Takebe was faced with an impending sense of crisis. Takebe thus resolved herself to quit delinquency, but the result of that was a fated meeting with her old rival, Soramori. Losing a fist-fight against Soramori, for some reason or other Takebe was now dating her. What kind of relationship did the two of them have back in high school? And will Takebe ever manage to graduate from delinquency...!?’

ive had a thing for delinquent girls ever since i first saw kamikaze girls and developed my crush on anna tsuchiya. this was then encouraged by this manga, which is a BEAUTIFUL story of not only the changes that come with starting a new relationship, but also the changes that come in the transition from childhood to adulthood.

i adore it.

thank you for reading!

lots of love,
