Sea Creature of the Week

Hello new and old friends alike, I decided I will make a new blog post every week displaying a new sea creature I find interesting.

This Week's sea creature is....

OPABINIA

Opabinia regalis

This adorable or terrifying sea creature lived in the oceans around 508 million years ago during the Cambrian period. A very strange prehistoric invertebrate animal, it had 5 eyestalks and a long flexible proboscis with a grasping claw at the end. This tiny sea creature probably used its trunk in the same way an elephant does, picking up food with the tip and passing it to the mouth. Opabinia only grew to be as large as 3 inches long. Recently scientists have discovered a new Opabinia species, this one is equipped with tiny hairlike details on its body. Because the fossil discovered had a poorly preserved head it is unknown if this new species had a different proboscis.
