the cat came back

there was this crazy drunk guy i used to see all the time at the local strip mall. he'd hang out in the restaurant/bar section of the supermarket and would mutter and sometimes shout nonsense. the first time i saw him, he was rambling about how he was gonna punch someone in the face. on one memorable occasion, he shouted "DON'T GO DOWNTOWN! KILL THE CHURCH! IT'S BAD LUCK!" it was hilarious

i haven't seen him since the pandemic started, which is understandable considering i don't go out as often as i used to and anyway everything's closed. i was a bit worried that he might've died - he seems to be in his 50s or 60s - but today i saw him again

he approached me while i was adjusting the stuff in my bag. he was wearing a mask but it was undeniably him. he said to me "do you believe in jesus?" taken aback i went "...yeah?" partially because i do believe jesus was a person who once existed, but mostly because i didn't want to know what would happen if i said no.

he held his hand up in a friendly way as if to say "you're good people" and said:

"those who are born again become kids again."

and i was like... yeah... cool beans dude... you have a nice day and we parted ways

i'm so glad the crazy drunk guy is ok but i wonder what happened to him in the past year to make him go from "KILL THE CHURCH" to "those who are born again become kids again"
