The funny thing about SpongeBob is that while he is supposed to be a living being, living in the ocean, his shape is totally unlike any real sponges, which are mostly asymmetrical blobs (and sometimes radially symmetrical).
Instead he is shaped like a rectangular synthetic kitchen sponge (thus the SquarePants).
I wonder why the animators chose that shape. Easier to draw?
