So I've been on the road for three days now, and I've passed through 8 states. At like 5:30 we arrived at the place we're staying the night which is only like 2 hours from our final destination. This place is GORGEOUS, straight out of Pinterest: cottages, farms, and art; now the only thing I was shocked about upon arrival was that a ton of people were riding around on horses like not for fun like this was on the way to grocery shop type travel, but knowing the state we're in they didn't need to (and to add for such a gorgeous place it was really unpopulated I would've imagined a place like that to have a ton of cottage-core lookin ppl). Then we parked, unpacked, and headed to the restaurant. Now this is a casual place, but I was wearing short shorts and a slightly cropped tank top, normal given the weather BUT when I got there it clicked why people were on horses and shit like that. Dog the entire town is Amish, I was getting HARSHLY judged in gods name by these people. Now I feel no shame for not dressing modestly because I'm not religious and have no reason to cover up other than my own comfort, but I'm wishing I wore jeans and a T-shirt because I could feel eyes on me and that was not a nice feeling, especially from a ton of people who are invested in a purity culture that I'm super against inflicting onto other people.
Another point is that I understand religion is super important to some people in their own personal sense which I respect 100% as long as they're not using that faith for wrong and I'm not going to assume that Amish people are mean just because they shape their life around religion. So, not knowing much about the Amish I'm a little worried walking into an Amish town in very much not modest clothes might be rude to them? IDK I'm not apologetic bc like it's my choice of what I want to wear and you shouldn't be laying eyes of judgment onto a 14-year-old girl trying not to die of heat stroke. But idk I thought the situation of someone who ran from organized religion accidentally walking into a town where its entire funtion is to be in gods name was kinda ironic.
