⭑ Playlist From June/July 2023 ⭑
these songs are taken from my monthly spotify playlists!
ive merged july + june bc this is my first blog post :3*
❥ Your New Cuckoo - The Cardigans
I’ve been listening to The Cardigans a lot lately. I listened to them as a teen but never paid much mind to them as an actual band, which bizarres me now bc they are truly amazing!! A lot of their songs, though shrouded in this softness, almost like white frilly lace, are devastatingly emotional. Think of that pain you feel when you love someone so much, it feels like it could be your end… that’s what listening to The Cardigans feels like. Your New Cuckoo is one of those songs, something I could listen to on a spring day. If you enjoy their more popular songs from this album (Lovefool, Step On Me) you will definitely enjoy this song, though I personally recommend the album Life.
❥ Hang On To Your Love - Sade
I adore Sade. This song especially has me yelling the lyrics alone in my room, dancing around, much like her other songs. If you like funk, RnB and 90s music in general, Sade is a staple, but you probably know that…
❥ Double Dare Ya - Bikini Kill
This month i’ve been getting really into Bikini Kill, as musicians and activists. Pure feminist, punk rage that leaves me feeling like I could take on the world and more. I’ve never been really into the riot grrrl scene, but Bikini Kill are extraordinary. Funny, witty and just undoubtedly and unapologetically punk. They have better songs in my opinion, such as Alien She, but this song solidified my opinion on them.
❥ Witches’ Rave - Jeff Buckley
Just another beautiful song from Jeff Buckley. His lyricism astounds me still. Possibly a fave from him.
❥ Oh Bondage Up Yours! - X-Ray Spex
If you’re thinking of getting into punk, especially feminist punk, I recommend X-Ray Spex. Lead by the brilliant Poly Styrene, they perfectly encapsulate the 70s punk scene attitude of pure rebellion and non conformity, especially for minorities. I think it’s important for acts like these to be shared and acknowledged for their influence, especially in alternative subcultures. Get to know!!
❥ Cornerstone - Arctic Monkeys
This is a little away from my usual recommendations (>_<) but I saw Arctic Monkeys live recently and it rekindled my appreciation. Despite their success, they have not fallen short and still put on an excellent show. Most importantly, I realise how much I still admire Alex Turner’s lyricism. Cornerstone is a beautiful song, and I have nothing more to say about it. Definitely a fave.
