Can We Talk about Bernie without the Politics?

Seriously, let's not drag politics into the blog. I just want to focus on the meme right now, more specifically, those lovely mittens! Like everyone else, I'm head over heels in love with those mittens and they come with some sweetness too. He got them from a constituent and has been knitting for him ever since. At least for 2+ years.

It's such a sweet gesture for someone to make handmade mittens like this in general. Those mittens will keep anyone so warm and cozy because of how they're made. They have a lining of felt on the inside that's made out of recycled material. Now, I don't know the fiber content of the yarn used or the weight yet but what I do know that it's made from a technique knowns as Intarsia knitting. It's where you use 2 or more strands of yarn in your work. This makes the mittens even warmer for those cold Vermont days.

Now, how they're constructed into a piece? I am still learning this. I'm reading a Reddit post I've found. (Click on this link if you want to check it out too.) According to this post, they've figured out that these beloved gloves are pieced together meaning they're sewn together which doesn't make me happy since I do enjoy seamless knitting. (It's why I try looking up seamless patterns for my CraftyKid and get pissy about not finding things!) You would have to break out the needle and thread if you wanted to add the felt to it.

I'm going to copy and paste the gauge since I don't feel like paraphrasing but this is what the author of the Reddit post has said: "On Bernie’s mittens, it looks like there are 4 white Swiss crosses on the back of his hand. That’s 17 stitches, so we’re talking about a really bulky gauge. Measure your hand to see what you‘d like your gauge to be for width." Being honest here, I rarely gauge things but when it comes to things like this, it's really important since you do need a well fitted mitten (or any garment really. That's why sometimes your ma's knitting is a bit too big at times: she lives dangerously!).

nordigeskog has stated as well that there's also room in the pattern for the gusset (the funny looking part where your thumb connects to your hand) so it looks pretty and what not.

I... I feel like I have a lot to figure out right now and a bit more research into Bernie's now famous mittens because I still have questions like what's the weight of the yarn? Is the yarn itself felted and made from 100% wool (not superwash. You cannot felt superwash, plant based, and man made fibers)? I still have so many questions. As more and more is revealed about the mittens, I'll be sharing it here on Spacehey for every other knitter who is like me and fell in love with them. Hopefully, I can get my shit done though before I do them. By the time that happens, spring will be in bloom!

Needless to say, I'm very happy that the US finally has their own famous knitted garment to rave about. It seemed like in the past decade, the majority of knitted garment that everyone wanted to make came from the Royal Family over in the UK. I honestly cannot blame them. Those hats and bonnets the Royal kids had where pretty cute!

It's time for me to get off and knit up some back up mittens for my son in the mean time. If you would love to support me in any way, shape, or form; I would highly encourage you to follow this link. It's a link that will direct you to all of my socials and my shops. Any little bit helps. I need money for food shopping and repairing my laptop. Thank you and happy crafting.
