Eiladh was right though. This wassupposed to be an easy job. Just a quick, get in, get the file, and get the fuck out while dealing with any snoops and vultures along the way. I'd decked the camera systems to make sure there weren't any surprises waiting for us. It was all going glinty until Torgyn grabbed that file. Who the hell keeps physical files these days anyway? After that, it all went to shit.
How the hell could Asuratek have been waiting for us? The second they pulled that file, a kill squad waltzed straight through the front door. No bells, no alarms. I tried to warn them but... fuck, why didn't I notice my whole crew had gone silent? I kept trying to warn them but they just kept nicking shit. Our other decker, Hargrave, was going through the system to see if there were any extra packets to sling. Anything to help pay his daughter's doctor bills. Poor bastard didn't stand a chance.
I watched the kill squad shred Hargrave, and I could do nothing. Sharpe covered the exit while Ash and Eiladh went one way, and Torgyn went the other, and all I could do was watch uselessly. Eiladh nearly put a bullet in me when she found me at the access port behind the building, and I almost let her. For what its worth, Asher'd talked her down.
Now here we were: Rolling back the the same feeds I'd saved to my deck. Reliving that same hell every few minutes trying to find something. Anything.
After what felt like an eternity, I unjacked and let out a long sigh while my head banged against the wall.
"Well?" Eiladh say expectantly.
"It... must've been the booker," I said, standing up and slipping my pistol back into my beltline, "He must've set us up. Its the only thing I can think of."
"So thats it then? They just died for some sick corpos kicks?"
"From the sounds of it, yeah"
"So the fuck are supposed to do now, deckerboy?"
"Well, I don't know about you, but I want answers, and I'm ready to see what that booker thinks about us getting away."
