Microtransactions in Mobile Games

There is this mobile game I have played for about 5 years now. The only reason why I have kept playing it is because I met a group of really awesome friends on there and we all play it together.

BUT in order to get any good shit in the game, you have to spend so. much. money.
For example:
The in-game currency is "gems." You can pay for gems with real money, or they give them out during events, for quests, etc. So I had saved up about 300 gems (that took a few months with no spending) so I could do a spawn, which is where you get new gears and monsters. In this spawn, you choose from 6 chests, and the jackpot chest either contains the monster, or treasure medals. I decided to spend all 300 gems on this spawn bc I wanted to see if I had any luck (spoiler: I didn't), and just ended up with 3.6k treasure medals.
You can use the treasure medals to exchange for some pretty good gear, but if you want the main monster, you need 10k treasure medals.
I decided to do the math to see how much money I would need to spend to get 10k, just based on my horrible luck.
So, 175 gems is $73.84. I need about 600 more gems to get close to 10k, if my luck remained the same. That's about $221.52 I'd have to spend. I don't got that type of disposable income.
Here is where it gets worse: The monsters have "hidden potentials" that boost the monsters stats, and makes them stronger. There are 4 potential slots. The slots can only be filled if you have the same exact monster and infuse it into itself.
SO if I wanted to fully max out the potentials I would need 3,600 gems, which is approximately $1500 extra dollars.
Maybe if I win the lottery I can afford this dumbass game and be OP.

That's microtransactions for you. They're overpriced so you bankrupt yourself and the game company gets rich. It's especially prevalent in games aimed at kids -- they're hoping kids who don't know any better rack up huge bills on their parent's tab. It's exploitative, and pre-COVID the uproar about EA's Star Wars games and the loot boxes was making politicians consider outlawing them.

It's messed up how it is truly aimed at kids. I know in my guild in the game, there is an 18 year old who has a job and makes pretty good money but he will spend $600-$800 bucks on the game just for one spawn. I yell at him and tell him to save his money because he is going to regret it later in life. I think they should be outlawed too. Also, my husband has been playing Star Wars: Squadrons, and he said there actually wasn't any micro-transactions in the game surprisingly. I was shocked when he told me that lol.
