Are you queer? Were you on Team Jacob during your Twilight phase? If the answer to both those questions is "yes", then Wolfsong by T.J. Klune is the book for you! The first book in the Green Creek series is told from the perspective of Ox, a timid young man who becomes close with the eccentric Bennett family, who, you guessed it, is a family made up of werewolf shapeshifters. He becomes particularly close with the youngest son of the family, Joe Bennett, who attaches himself to Ox and becomes the human (or werewolf) equivalent of a chatterbox after nearly two years of not speaking.
Admittedly, I am not one who normally enjoys these types of shapeshifter fantasy stories, however, I thought I'd give Wolfsong a try as I am a big fan of Klune's other works. Due to this, I cannot say for certain if it stands out or is unique to other books like it, however, what I can say is that it is definitely a well-written piece of fantasy fiction. Although I do not think it is a masterpiece nor do I think it's Klune's best work, however, that does not mean I didn't enjoy Wolfsong, in fact, I liked it quite a bit. I thought the plot was a bit generic, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it is what Klune was able to do with that plot which made the book as a whole enjoyable. There are scenes with great tension, good fight sequences, and some frankly disturbing scenes which I can't repeat for fear of spoilers, but do trust me when I say that these aspects combined with the diverse cast of well-written characters make for this an entertaining read. Wolfsong is approx. 500 words but feels around 300 words. I credit this to Klune's ability to hook readers in from the first chapter and keep you there for hours. The book isn't fast pace, in fact, it takes time to set up the story and develop characters, and only has a few action scenes, but it feels fast-paced which again, is all credited to Klune's masterful writing style.
Like Klune's other works, Wolfsong is an emotional rollercoaster with a good mix of spicy scenes, traumatic scenes, sad scenes, and wholesome scenes. If you are like me and love getting your heart broken and put back together over again, this book is perfect for you. Overall, Wolfsong is a fun read that you come for the queerness and hot werewolves and stay for the emotional and beautiful writing.
