River Water

River water goes up my nose in a brief attempt to make you laugh,

so I could rise above the strong, but not as strong as me, current,

and see you look down upon me,

drenched like a puppy,

and smile.

Despite the discomfort, I also couldn't help but laugh,

as I stood up from my tumble, my thighs well above the surface.

I am strong enough to stand, wrapping my toes into the sand,

and bending forwards. I would stay here forever, even in the cold, even in a storm,

if it meant I could make you smile like that every day,

and to feel your warm hands guide me to land,

and giggle as my hair drips into the grass and my nose runs,

and I say to you that my sunglasses flew off in the water.
