the lack of respect for media preservation in lieu of short term profit

with the news of two shows getting completely wiped from streaming within the month of their release (grease: rise of the pink ladies, and star trek: prodigy) it's making me think about how short sided the streaming game really is.

this is far from the first time this has happened (disney+ purging it's day 1 originals, including the world according to jeff goldblum a show i actually really liked. the hbomax cartoon network stuff) but the fact streaming services are willing to make it actually impossible to legally watch these shows (some of which are well loved and have dedicated fanbases like infinity train) just for tax write offs and not having to pay residuals is the last greedy swan song of streaming.

every streaming service except prime and apple tv+, which are much humbler in their spending (apple tv+ relying entirely on originals) and prime mostly just being a bonus for people who want free shipping, is losing money rapidly. there are plenty of reasons for this. partially the fact that there are so many services, no one can pay for all of them (peacock hanging on for dear life rn), but also the fact that these services all seem to be managed by an ai with the soul goal to take down the company in the stupidest way imaginable. netflix doing... that and hbo, sorry, max's, dumb ass name change come to mind.

another thing is that piracy is needed to keep obscure media alive. a lot of my favorite shows were trapped in copyright limbo at some point or another, the only way to watch them being illegally. i think even the most average consumer is stick of the 700 streaming services. i know this because my mom has began pirating shows, and this is very out of character for my mom. like that's how bad it is

sorry this was rambling i just needed to speak
