My Intention for SpaceHey (Top 5)

I've been thinking a lot about how I want to approach this website. SpaceHey almost feels freeing in a way. In a time where posts are deemed "unacceptable" or "acceptable" depending on the site owner's political affiliation, this site breaks the mold (at least for now). I made a list of things I will not do this time around when using social media.

1. Use the block button

I think the block button might actually be the most dangerous innovation that social media normalized in the early 2010s. What do people do now when they don't agree with something? - They get upset. Differing opinions are no longer allowed online in 2021. Civil conversations are rare, and people very seldom listen to others with opposing viewpoints.

I think the block button conditioned an entire generation of people to actively avoid opinions that challenge their beliefs. So when opposing views are presented to us, we get upset because our entire lives are crafted to avoid them. We lose that sense of comfort contrived within our own echo chambers. In the span of 10 years, we've completely forgotten how to think critically.

2. Post about politics

Discussing politics is like discussing sports. However, when you discuss sports, you have to actually know what you're talking about. I'm retiring from posting about politics.

3. Waste an opportunity to make someone feel good about something they posted/created

It takes zero effort for me to comment on someone's new song, or compliment their profile, or even support their bulletin. SpaceHey seems like it has potential to be the most SOCIAL of all social media. The lack of timeline means that you have to reach out to others and connect - Not just mindlessly consume low effort memes and screenshots from Twitter.

4. Only add people of the opposing sex/gender

I'm in a happy relationship and engaged. Only adding women is just another way to feed the male ego. I'm open to everyone. I'll connect with anyone - You never know who you may miss out on by only adding people whom you find "attractive".

5. Censor/mute myself

This kinda goes hand in hand with my first reason. Websites now are run on an algorithm based system which rewards content which reinforces the beliefs/fears/biases of those consuming it. This means that if you post something that 95% of your followers disagree with on Twitter, it will not show up very much in their timeline.

SpaceHey uses a blog/bulletin system which rewards content creation, and not just content ranking. This is more akin to a chronological system than the former. I will speak up and be honest - I will try to be vulnerable. I'll post about my life to create a feeling of authenticity (with some limitations).
