KING FOR A DAY

“This song is about getting pushed past your breaking point. Sometimes I feel like there are just too many things weighing on my mind at once and I can’t control my thoughts or even my body at times. Mike came up with the title and I thought it was a perfect way to describe the song. We wrote the music for this song with my friends Curtis Peoples and Steve Miller in a cabin that we converted into a studio in Big Bear, California. For months, fans had been tweeting at me to do a song with Kellin Quinn from the band Sleeping with Sirens. I had never met him before, but we started talking on Twitter due to our mutual fans. I asked him if he’d be down to do a song together and the rest was history! Big thanks to our boy Kellin’s for joining forces and making something special with us.”

“You told me think about it, well I did

Now I don't wanna feel a thing anymore”

A MATCH INTO WATER

“I wrote this song for my ex-girlfriend who has been fighting breast cancer. She recently finished her chemo-therapy treatment and I wrote the lyrics about how proud I am of her for making it through all of the pain and the treatment all on her own. She’s the strongest girl I’ve ever known and I am inspired by her every day”

“I know that you're in pain

But if we die at the same time does it still scare you?”

HOLD ON ‘TILL MAY

“A girl I used to date once told me that her parents neglected her as a child. She remembered climbing this tree in her backyard and hiding from them just to see if they would look for her, or even notice that she was gone. I always thought it was such a sad story and I wrote this song for her. It also talks about the ups and downs in a relationship that we’ve had recently.”

“See, you're just wasted and thinking 'bout the past again

darling, you’ll be okay”

MAY THESE NOISES STARTLE YOU IN YOUR SLEEP TONIGHT

“This is the intro track to the following song “Hell Above.” We separated the tracks because it felt like a good way to kick off the album. The lyrics talk about burning down the house that you grew up in because of all the terrible memories and experiences that you had there.”

“Mother, father, I love you so
But this is just me, disguised as me
I'm the killer who burned this home”

HELL ABOVE

“I wrote this song for all of our fans who feel like they don’t have a home or a place that they fit in. It was inspired by the letters, messages, and conversations that we’ve had with them over the last couple of years. In the choruses I sat “this is a wasteland, my only retreat.” I am referring to the shows that we play as a temporary home for those who need it. It May not be much, but at least it’s a place where we can forget about our problems for a little while.”

“Cannot spend another night in this home
I close my eyes and take a breath real slow
The consequence is if I leave, I'm alone
But what's the difference when you beg for love?”

BULLS IN THE BRONX

“While we were recording, some kids sent us a message explaining that their friends, a young girl at the age 16, had just committed suicide. They explained that our band had meant a lot to her and felt that they should contact us to let us know what had happened. Attached to the message was a link to her Tumblr page where she posted a video explaining why it has all come to this and basically saying goodbye and apologizing to anyone who cares about her, even though she was convinces that no one really cared. It was heart breaking seeing such a young girl saying things like, she’ll “never be anything special” or that she was “ugly and disgusting.” This video haunted my for weeks and I ended up writing about her every once in a while”

“Please don't take this out on me
'Cause you're the only thing that's keeping me alive
And I don't wanna wait for the down set date
'Cause I would rather end it all tonight
If I mean anything to you
I'm sorry but I made up my mind”

PROPS & MAYHEM

“I wrote myself into the movie Attack the Block for this song. The film is about a bunch of thug kids in London who save the world from an alien invasion. I threw in a lot of personal experience and added a love story to make things interesting as well. I wrote the main riff and chords to the song on an instrument called a “Kalimba” that I bought in Switzerland while we were on tour.”

“I need you here right now,
I'm crying in the water so you don't hear the sound”

TANGLED IN THE GREAT ESCAPE

“I wrote this about one of my best friends who got hooked on some pretty serious drugs. It got to the point where I was so scared that if he didn’t get cleaned up soon, I knew he was going to die. I felt so powerless because I am always on tour and there’s no real way for me to help someone like this from so far away. I flew out to Detroit to do some co-writing with my friend B-South (Brian Southall). We had done a lot of work together on our side project Isles & Glaciers, so I hit him up to see if he’d be down to make some more songs. By the time I got back to San Diego we had written 5 songs in 5 days, but this was the one that fit the album the best. I asked our friend Jason Butler from the band letlive. To sing on this song for two reasons. One being that I have a lot of respect and admiration towards him as a singer and as a person. Two being that he is straight edge, and I thought maybe he could relate to the lyrics and topic in some way. Special thanks to Jason for bringing this song to life.”

“I never meant to hurt you, no, no, no, no
I only meant to do this to myself”

I’M LOW ON GAS AND YOU NEED A JACKET

“I do a lot of writing while driving at night. During the time that I was at home writing lyrics for the album, I went on a few camping trips by myself along the coast. This song came to me while I was driving. It’s mostly wandering thoughts about my relationship with this girl back home. She sent me a blacked out drunk text once about some crazy party she was at, and it made me all over-protective and bitter that I wasn’t there. The title came from one of my favorite movies “Wayne’s World II.”

“But I will soon forget the color of your eyes
And you'll forget mine”

THE FIRST PUNCH

“The First Punch’ is about re-uniting with someone after you’ve both decided that we should just be friends. It’s about losing all self-control and letting your emotions guide you. It can make for an unhealthy relationship but sometimes we let our emotions get the best of us. We co-wrote the music for this song with our good friend Tom Denney in Florida. I always take at least one trip out there to write with Tom because our styles seem to work well together, plus it’s one of the only times that we really get to hang out so it’s always a good time!”

“I've got so much to give, but
I would kill just to feel less invisible”

ONE HUNDRED SLEEPLESS NIGHT

“This song is about watching the ones that you love move further and further away from you, and all because of this that neither of you can control. The lyrics are pretty literal and describe a night that I will remember for the rest of my life. Everything changed after that night and it’s left me pretty confused and unsatisfied.”

“So don't you forget what we had
It's like I was never even there”

STAINED GLASS EYES AND COLORFUL TEARS

“This song is about hoping for a better life for the one that you love. Standing by that person even if they are at their lowest point. It’s also about wanting to repay someone who has done so much for you, but never being able to.”

“But I swear to God, I'm gonna change the world
And I promise you someday we'll tell ourselves
"Oh my God, this is paradise"
