Tall Tale Theory
Tall Tale Theory is an axiomatic concept within Naruto that I have created
and/or unintentionally stolen. Although a presupposition in my current
meta, I have arguments to back this ideology up (see examples).
The concept is meant to explain filler.
The
Theory: Filler, whether it be non-canon anime events, non-canon game events/cut scenes, game tactics and/or moves, and novels/databooks are all considered tall tales. These can be thought of as non-witnessed events that have been passed around in the form of rumors. Any non-canon events baked into the main plot can be considered canon/alternate canon. This relies heavily on skeptic epistemology and logical reasoning found in historical study.
What
this means: All filler, if substantiated through evidence, can be considered true events and/or feats.
Examples:
- Tsunades IOU episode: There is a small filler that exists within Tsunade's arc. In the filler, Tsunade's briefcase is opened and the contents are all IOU slips that she uses to avoid gambling payments. This is not only in character for this specific Tsunade, but is strengthened by the knowledge that Tsunade is a fairly dirty gambler. On top of this, her briefcase contents isn't a major claim in any way. The episode involves characters that are all in the area and each one acts within character. Mundane claims require mundane evidence. Its perfectly reasonable to assume this briefcase contents claim is most likely true.
- Lee and Guy take on a 4 tails: There is a movie turned filler that shows Guy and Lee using tandem Eight Gates tactics to take on a generic four tails V2 cloak. Although I have no evidence to substantiate the story events, the fighting claims themselves can be substantiated through power scaling.
- The Otsutsuki: The Otsutsuki originally existed as a movie. They were later substantiated once the movie events were placed into canon episodes. Any differences can be chalked up to alternate canon. Another side of this is Urashiki's inclusion. His tie directly to canon episodes would canonize him. The following time travel arc would need additional evidence as it breaks from the main story.
- Sasuke's Game Ultimate: Sasuke in Storm 4 is able to trap another player within a Planetary Devastation and destroy it, dealing massive damage. Sasuke is shown to be able to do all these things individually. If a discussion calls for a Sasuke who would use this attack, its perfectly reasonable to assume he could do so.
