The beginning of the DCU has started under the watch of James Gunn. (Sort of) The long awaited Flash movie came out inspired by the Flashpoint story from the comic series. Ezra Miller returns as the hero Barry Allen that he first starting portraying in Batman vs Superman in a movie that is suppose to help jump start what was an ill fated DC movie universe.
The movie opens with Barry helping out Batman (Ben Affleck) with a situation occurring in Gotham where you see some beautiful slow motion sequences before the main story begins of Barry's last hope of proving his father innocent of killing his mother going down the drain. Lost and helpless he starts to run to the point he opens up portal inside the speed force where he realizes he can go back in time. When he returns to his normal time he seeks advice from Batman on what he should do. Bruce informs Barry he can not stop his mother's murder because he may cause too many drastic changes to the world. Barry unconvinced decides if he cant stop his mother's murder, he can prevent it by making sure his mother doesnt forget a can of tomato sauce from the grocery store.
Barry goes back in time to where his mother was at the grocery store putting the can of tomato sauce in her shopping cart and returns to his time. While in the speed force and unknown entity kicks him out to the new world he created where his mother is alive and well. While spending time with his parents he sees another version of himself and realizes he did not return to his time, but to when he was 18 years old on the day he got his powers. To make matters worse it was also the night General Zod came to Earth looking for Superman.
Not wanting to screw up anymore, Barry grabs 18 year old Barry and brings breaks him into the crime lab where he was interning for young Barry to get his powers. With some resistance from young Barry, the lighting once again strikes Barry Prime with the bolt going through him into young Barry. Where young Barry gained his powers, Barry prime lost them. He is now put in a situation where not only having to learn how to deal with not having powers, he has to teach his very impatient and immature younger self the do's and donts with the speed force.
With General Zod's impending attack on the planet, Barry needs to find Superman, but runs into an obstacles. There is no evidence that Superman exist on the planet. To make matters worse there is no evidence no other member of the Justice League exist... except for Batman. The Barrys seek out Bruce Wayne to help them find Superman in order to defeat Zod. When they arrive at Wayne Manor, Barry prime is surprise to find out the Batman of the new timeline was not the same Batman that he knew, but a much older one. (Michael Keaton)
After some much explanation to Bruce Wayne, Bruce would deduce that Barry did not change the timeline from the point he changed it, but created a new universe. Desperate to find Superman before Zod begins his destruction on Earth, Bruce agrees to become Batman one more time just to help the Barrys find Superman.*****
And this is where I stop the story review. The movie was great and very fun to watch. Although the second act was slow and boring at times, it makes up for it when Michael Keaton as Batman shows up. It was fun to see some of the cameos in the movie but are ruined with some of the worst CGI I have ever seen in time where Paul Walker and Peter Cushing were realistically created for movies they were in after their deaths. The CGI in the scenes where the cameo occured wouldnt be acceptable with today video game standards.
For those hoping that either Grant Gustin or John Wesley Shipp make cameos as their respective Flashes dont get your hopes up. However what appears to be Teddy Sears version of fake Jay Garrick strangely makes an appearance. As for that Nicholas Cage cameo. All I will say is if you know the history of Kevin Smith involvement with that movie you will get a good chuckle as well as the surprise cameo that appears at the end thats gives you a good final laugh. As for Sasha Calle as Supergirl. She was a great on screen presence but unfortunately isnt given much to show off her acting. She did however play a very convincing Supergirl.
There is a credit scene at the very end, but if you ask me, you can skip it as it did nothing to set up a future movie nor was it really funny. Hope you enjoyed this review. Catch ya on the flipside V.J.
