Have you ever been criticized or made fun of for your looks? That's what happens all the time in this hostile world. I'm here to tell you why it shouldn't matter and how comparing yourself to photoshopped pictures of models is unhealthy and can make you feel insecure in various ways.
There are unrealistic and toxic beauty standards for women and young girls to live by, like being thin, tall, having long hair, a small nose, high cheekbones, thigh gap, clear skin, light skin color, small waist, and an hourglass-like figure. Which is actually what more than 60% of women prefer to be seen as or look like.
These unrealistic beauty standards on social media can cause depression, eating disorders, anxiety, and enormous amounts of insecurities. 90% of girls say they follow at least one social media account that makes them feel less beautiful due to the heavy filtering, editing, and makeup.
Social media creates a false sense of unrealistic expectations and creates one standard for "beauty" based on whatever goes viral. If somebody is suffering from body dissatisfaction severe enough, they have a higher risk of developing an eating disorder or depression just by watching so-called "naturally beautiful" and "conventionally attractive" influencers on social media.
This is why setting unrealistic beauty standards for women and young girls should stop now. Many people each day compare themselves to unreal things that they see on the internet which can also destroy their mental health and self-esteem. How would you feel if you were once very confident and you found out that there was a new bunch of standards for women to follow to look more beautiful because you weren't already seen as so?
I wrote this for a school writing project last year, what do yall think??
