Archangels - a pretty interesting topic(´・ᴗ・`)

✩ Disclaimer

Hello everyone,
I'll keep my introduction brief. I've been fascinated in religious lore, specifically angels, since I was 12 years old.I will solely use references from the Christian Bible in this article because I am the most familiar with it and was raised a Christian until i was 10. When i have learned more about the religious texts of judaism and islam, i will probably write another blog post on those religions and thier detailed information on Angels. At the time, some topics are still unclear to me, and out of respect for those religions, i won't take the chance of publishing inaccurate information.

As previously said, the topic of this blog entry will be angels, particularly my personal favorite category of angels, the archangels.I won't go into great detail on what precisely an angel is because
1) it's still a hot topic of conversation today
2) there are 9 different types of angels,
which I'll go into more detail about in a later blog because this will be long enough already.

Archangels - What are they ?

Archangel is a term that has various interpretations and meanings depending on the context. In religious and mythological contexts, archangels are considered to be high-ranking angels who hold significant roles and responsibilities. The concept of archangels exists in several religious traditions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

In Christianity, the term "archangel" is derived from the Greek words "arche" (meaning "ruler" or "chief") and "angelos" (meaning "messenger"). While the Bible mentions several angels by name, it specifically identifies only one archangel by name—Michael. Michael is portrayed as a powerful angelic being who serves as a protector and warrior against evil forces. He is often depicted as leading the armies of God in battles against Satan and his followers.

Judaism also recognizes the existence of archangels, although their names and specific roles may vary across different Jewish texts and interpretations. In Jewish tradition, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, and other archangels are often mentioned. Each archangel is believed to have a distinct purpose or domain of influence. For example, Gabriel is associated with communication and revelation, while Raphael is associated with healing.

Similarly, in Islam, the concept of archangels is prominent. The Quran mentions four archangels by name: Jibril (Gabriel), Mikail (Michael), Israfil (Raphael), and Azrael. Jibril is regarded as the chief of the archangels and is believed to have played a significant role in delivering the divine revelations to the Prophet Muhammad.

Outside of religious contexts, the term "archangel" has been popularized in various forms of media, including literature, art, and pop culture. In these depictions, archangels often possess immense power, extraordinary abilities, and are seen as key figures in the cosmic hierarchy of celestial beings. A good and well known example would be the 2005 show Supernatural.

The primary archangels mentioned in the Bible, along with the duties they play, are as follows

  1. Michael:
Michael (מיכאל / Mee-kha-el) is one of the most well-known archangels in biblical lore. His name means \"Who is like God?\" and he is often depicted as a powerful warrior. Michael is regarded as the leader of the heavenly armies and is associated with protection, righteousness, and judgment. In the Book of Revelation, he leads the angels in the battle against the dragon (Satan) and his forces.

  2. Gabriel:
Gabriel's ( גַּבְרִיאֵל / Gav-ree-el) name means \"God is my strength.\" He is known as the heavenly messenger and is frequently associated with delivering important messages from God. Gabriel is prominently featured in the Bible, appearing to the prophet Daniel to deliver prophecies (Daniel 8:16, 9:21) and announcing the births of John the Baptist (Luke 1:11-20) and Jesus (Luke 1:26-38).

  3. Raphael:
Raphael's (רְפָאֵל / Re-fa-el) name means \"God heals.\" Although not explicitly identified as an archangel in the canonical Bible, the Book of Tobit describes Raphael as one of the seven angels who stand before the Lord. Raphael is known for his healing abilities and guiding Tobias on a journey to help his family. He plays a significant role in the Book of Tobit, providing protection and guidance to the protagonist.

  4. Uriel:
Uriel's (אוּרִיאֵל / Oo-ree-el) name means "God is my light" or "Fire of God" While the name "Uriel" does not appear in the canonical Bible, some Jewish and Christian traditions mention him as an archangel. Uriel is associated with wisdom, illuminating divine knowledge, and offering guidance. He is often depicted as a messenger or illuminator of truth.

  5. Camael:                                                                                                         Camael ( כַּמָּאֵל / Ka-ma-el ) is often associated with courage, strength, and divine justice. The name "Camael" is believed to derive from Hebrew and can be roughly translated as "He who sees God" or "One who seeks God" In certain esoteric traditions and occult literature, Camael is sometimes depicted as one of the seven archangels ruling over the celestial spheres or as one of the ten archangels in charge of the Sephiroth in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The specific attributes and associations attributed to Camael can vary depending on the source or system of belief.
✫ It is important to note that the information about archangels in biblical lore is not extensive, and much of the specific details and roles attributed to them come from later religious texts, apocryphal writings, and theological traditions. Different religious and cultural contexts may also have variations in their understanding and elaboration of the archangels!! ✫
