Canned Theater

This is a shower thought that changed a part of my worldview quite dramatically.

Cinema. Movies, Motion Pictures. Well, where do they come from? Theatre. They present a story a dramatourgy that is universal whether it’s on paper or on our phone screens.

The difference between Theatre and Cinema is obvious. The possibility to change perspective, the possibility for special effects, and the convenient side effect, that once it’s interpreted as is, it’s immutable for showing after showing until the end of thyme.

This could generally change how we view it.

No one would go and say ‘Hey this is not original the Chamberlains Men playing Romeo and Juliet in the Globe theatre. Why would you remake this?’
No the mutable origin of a play makes it so that we expect it to be different every time we see it. This means that over time the play can adapt and grow. Every crew can add their flavour and it’s expected and good. We might prefer the innocent interpretation of a high school or the raw performance storm of the Royal Shakespeare Company. And no one is lesser because of it.

What if we treated Movies the same?: New interpretation? - Sure show me your flavour of this time.

We would start treating FX like salt and pepper and not like the one broth everything is based on today. The playwrights could set their name on the Movie next to the faces starring.

And when we treat TV as takeout. It too becomes more considerate and deliberate.

Just a thought.
