It's a special entity in html that allows you to make all the little html brackets and hearts you want! It can even be used to express how tired I am of y'all trying to IM code that could be used to better profiles everywhere! <! D:<
(initial edit you can't copy and paste it because of the way I coded the blog to get around it and actually show the entity without having it change to <. sorry about that. :/)

You can also paste code in a converter like this one and justclick HTML and Encode then copy/paste the result so you get something like this:
hi
<div>hi</div>
and sometimes using a code tag works (if this looks weird, then this is one of those times it didn't):
