okay so for pride month this year i'm doing a little thing where i watch one lgbtq movie a day for the entire month of june! well, i try to. i'm only on the fifth day and i've already missed a day.. but oh well. i'll review each of them briefly at the end of each week, or whenever i have the time to type up a blog. here are the ones i've watched so far!
1 - my own private idaho (1991)
rating: 5/5 | representation: 4.9/5
naturally, i start pride month off watching my favorite movie ever, which just so happens to be about a gay man. my own private idaho (dir. gus van sant) is about a gay hustler with narcolepsy living in portland, oregon. wanting to reconnect with his mother, he goes on a road trip across idaho, to europe, in hopes of finding her. i'm a little biased so that's why i gave it such a high rating, but i also think that the representation was very good. it's not fully perfect which is why i took.... 0.1 point away..... but i think it does well for its time. mike, the main character played by river phoenix, doesn't follow any gay stereotypes at all and doesn't suffer from internalized homophobia like many gay protagonists do. it's refreshing to see a character who doesn't suffer from being gay. the story itself is good too, and the somewhat avant-grande style is my favorite part of the film. also keanu reeves is so hot in this
2 - dog day afternoon (1975)
rating: 4.5/5 | representation: 2.5/5
i really liked this movie! i thought it was pretty hilarious; it's about a guy who robs a bank for his wife's gender-affirming surgery, but the robbery becomes increasingly complicated as it goes on. al pacino is sonny, the guy robbing the bank for his wife, and his acting work is amazing in this film. i really like how queer people weren't really villainized in it, they were just treated as people. yes, sonny's wife, leon, isn't the best transgender representation, but she was treated like a character and not a stereotype. the whole deal with sonny having two wives, one he abandoned and one he just married on kind of a whim is a little weird, especially when his real counterpart wasn't with his first wife by the time he was with his second. did i mention that this movie is based on a real event? so while the movie is definitely a product of its time, it... made effort!
i skipped june 3 because i was honestly just really tired and passed out 15 minutes into the movie... i meant to watch portrait of a lady on fire. hopefully, i'll get to watch it at some point this pride month because i've heard lots of good things about it! the movies from june 4-10 are show me love; interview with the vampire; love, simon; but i'm a cheerleader; the boys in the band; and boys don't cry.
