Films I watched in May ‘23

Sup yall. In May I watched a lot of movies. There rly wasn’t much to do except watch movies with my friends, so I ended up seeing a total of twenty-two films this past month. Some classics, some big ones, some indies. Here’s a few words on everything I saw. Check the letterboxd links for more of my thoughts + tagged who I watched it with.

May 6th - Ratatouille

My first Pixar film in a long time, forgot how much I loved this one. Top 3 maybe? Watching Pixar movies with my online friends is rly fun. Also absolutely the best Pixar soundtrack, I literally teared up at that one song lol

May 7th - Dude, Where’s My Car?

OK this one is so underrated?? I watched it last year because I remember my dad owns a DVD of it and I’ve never seen it. This is that real y2k shit. The ‘and thennnn’ bit is still so funny

May 10th - River of Grass

Needed something to put on while I cleaned out my disgusting keyboard so I found this on MUBI. Very chill watch, is this what they call mumblecore? The characters are interesting enough but I felt it was too nonchalant about the plot.

May 12th - The Super Mario Bros. Movie & The Lighthouse

OK so. Very different films to watch within mere hours of each other. I saw the new Mario movie with Rocky (my stepdad) in our small town’s rundown theatre. Only people in that room. Felt like I watched a Mario-themed cocomelon video for 20 minutes but it was enjoyable. The Lighthouse was soooo good. Watched it with Noah and April which made it so much funnier. This is kinda a horror movie lol?? Some ppl thirst over Robert pattinson for twilight but im more of an A24 hoe, sooo. Might have to do a rewatch, for pride month’s sake.

May 13th - Pearl

Yeahhhh!! Finally got around to seeing Pearl after I got a blu-ray at Walmart. That was so fun. Love pearl forever she did nothing wrong.!!

May 14th - Parasite

Hooooooly shit. That’s a good ass movie. Kinda had me confused at the start until the driver got replaced, then I figured it out. The insane ways the plot folds out is so!! OMG ..

May 15th - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Went to dinner and the mall and finally the theatre with Kai and Cristian for Kai’s birthday. We went to the barnes & noble twice and i got some criterion blu-rays. This was a surprisingly good watch. Even though I’m the biggest marvel hater online, the Guardians of the Galaxy movies still hit for me.

May 16th - Do the Right Thing

Absolutely a new fav. The camerawork, the COLOURS!!!, the music!!, the wit, the love, the passion, it’s all so good. A summertime vibe that’s still so relevant nowadays. All the characters have their own iconic personalities and totally memorable. Smiled thru most of this movie, the last act totally hits even if the coda in the credits roll feels a bit centrist and to please the studios (which it was lol)

May 17th - Fallen Angels

Been meaning to get into this one for a while. Wong’s work seemed like such a thing I’d love, and I was right. It’s this kinda depressing but VERY romantic look into a few characters in a place I’ve never been. The cinematography is grungy and has that sense of loneliness that any town at night has, probably why I love how it looks so much. Perfect pacing.

May 18th - Breathless

Watched this on a kinda mid YouTube upload a while back, and I liked it but knew I’d have to give it a rewatch to truly get it. I can’t say I’m fully there but now I see it. I do that lip thing now lol. And I totally see its place in film history. Just a very interesting watch. Smells like cigarettes and old department stores in the best way possible.

May 25th - Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Only saw half of it this time but i fucking love this movie. Might be my fav John Hughes? Fun and rambunctious, totally 80’s. Ferris is a huge inspiration to my future senioritis. Holy shit im a senior!! That’s crazy. I’ll have to fully watch it again.

May 26th - WALL-E

Yeah that’s my fav Disney and fav Pixar. Watched with Noah and we ate this movie up. One of my top three childhood favs, still holds up. Also.. bring back credits that keep the movie going!!!

May 27th - Hot FuzzUnfriended, & Airplane Mode

That was a crazy movie night. We started off with Hot Fuzz bc we’ve put it off for so long now, and it’s one the best from Edgar Wright. Maybe better than Shaun of the Dead… and then we watched Unfriended for the lolz. Actually pretty enjoyable and has some good suspense. Was surprised how much we enjoyed it. Airplane Mode was another one we’ve been putting off, but April wanted to watch it bc of how bad it looks. Oh god it was wayyyy worse than that. Like holy fuck. The worst movie I’ve ever seen. Noah left the stream running and went to bed halfway thru, and the stream froze towards the end and we never saw if they survived, so I’ll just assume the worst happened bc that’s funnier.

May 29th - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World & The Social Network

Another gusicx3 film club watch party, rly fun. Scott Pilgrim is like one of the server’s mutual favourite movies. Just so fun and I think about it a lot, very quotable. The Social Network was a painful watch bc every time Zuckerberg spoke he always eats, but I also want him to explode sooooo. Loveeee the soundtrack though.

May 30th - On the Count of Three

We were going to watch Mean Girls and Unfriended: Dark Web, but then I fell asleep for seven hours. I just watched this on my own bc it was a thirst save to my watchlist. Actually so good. Warm and comforting for being a movie abt suicide and depression. Might come back to this often.

May 31st - Kiki’s Delivery Service, Hotel Chevalier, & The Darjeeling Limited

Okayyyy coming back to kiki’s for the first time in about four years, still not my favourite ghibli film but i really like it. Kiki is suuuuper relatable, one of my fav ghibli characters. Watched it halfway during my last day of school and finished it on the way to vegas. We got to our hotel and they gave us the completely wrong room, so we had a two-bedroom suite which was insane. I stayed in the entire time and had a nice relaxing time in my own bedroom, watching my Criterion copy of The Darjeeling Limited. My first full Wes Anderson probably ever. Sooooo good. Totally helps to watch Hotel Chevalier first, like the blu-ray lets you do. Had my first bath in over five years possibly while reading the booklet that comes with that blu-ray. Totally gonna enter my Wes Anderson era now.

That’s it Bye !!

Love always,

Wyatt
