Modern social media sucks.

Hey, friends. It's been awhile, but I'm back on here with a new blog entry. And this one is about my thoughts on social media. I'll be honest, I'm beginning to think it's a curse on humanity in more ways than one. Ironically, I'm posting on a site that could be considered "social media", but SpaceHey is not like the social media giants of 2023(Facebook, Twitter, Discord, TikTok and the like) since SpaceHey is modeled after MySpace in it's heyday of the mid-2000s. The biggest difference between MySpace and sites like Facebook is that they didn't sell advertising or rely on algorithms. Also, MySpace was only used by actual human beings and not large corporations like current social media giants allow. But the biggest issue I have with social media is that has basically made Americans(and people in general)hate each other. Thanks to the virtual anonymity of the Internet, people can say nasty things towards each other without consequence. And this also led to a rise of extremists and the creation of groups like the Proud Boys as people have been able to find groups of people who have the same political views as them. Not to mention the spread of conspiracy theories and misinformation, such as the disproven claim that vaccines cause autisim or that anti-Semitic QAnon crap. Once extreme fringe theories have become mainstream thanks to social media and that could end up getting people killed. It already has.

Basically, we need to get rid of most modern social media and get back to the basics. That's why I mostly prefer SpaceHey since it allowed to you to just talk about your interests and attract a small number people who shared the same interests and it allowed for better social interaction, which is a lot harder with sites like Facebook. That's why I hope that SpaceHey, which is the true successor to MySpace becomes more popular because it allowed the user to have more control instead of a corporate algorithm that existed solely to sell advertising.
