I recently watched this video on the GoldenEye speedrunning strategy known as lookdown. I'm not particularly interested in the game or speedrunning as a whole, but I find the whole situation fascinating. On one hand, I can sort of understand the people who don't like this strategy, as it does take some of the fun out of playing the game. On the other hand, I find the discovery of such a weird programming quirk to be utterly delightful. In any case, I do think the controversy it caused seems kind of paradoxical. If what you really care about is having fun, then why should it matter that you aren't going to achieve WR speeds? I'm not a GoldenEye speedrunner, though, so maybe my appraisal of the situation is completely off-base. I'm mostly just interested in the bizarre technical reason lookdown is so effective. For those who are curious, this reddit comment summarizes it.
