I was an idiot and forgot to take some screens last night, so I didn't bother posting my thoughts. Screens are very important since it helps show off just how beautiful this series is. Yesterday's episode was one of the most beautiful.
This episode is all about the Oceans with very few dinosaurs. It's a fully fleshed-out prehistoric marine ecosystem that spans the globe. The only dinosaurs were the baby Pyroraptors and a Hesperornis (an avian dinosaur). We get a wide range of ammonites, Xiphactinus, Phosphorosaurus, and Morturneria. I counted at least 4 different ammonite species. It was incredible. Prehistoric marine life has been attempted in various paleontology documentaries, but not covered with such depth. You see one or two creatures and that's it. This episode is teeming with life in the ocean with ammonites just being ammonites floating around and just existing. We now have an episode on marine life in each season so prehistoric marine life isn't left out. I'll say it now, I don't know how future documentaries of prehistoric marine life documentaries can top this episode short of increasing the scope and budget. Will someone spend that kind of money on a documentary only covering prehistoric marine life? Let's face it, dinosaurs will always get more attention from the general public, so they were smart to squeeze in as many other creatures that aren't dinosaurs to help flesh out the world.
Also, thinking back on other prehistoric documentaries that feature marine life, they tend to have hyperbolic episodes about some giant super mosasaur but upon further studies, turn out to never be as impressively big as they're hyped up to be. This is something that Prehistoric Planet has successfully avoided. This is what separates this show from others.
Based on what I heard, season 2 is basically leftover material that they didn't have time to finish in season 1, so it totally makes sense why some episodes are shorter. Despite being leftover stuff, the show just has so many new creatures to showcase in each episode, and I think this episode had the most new animals to show. They're just animated and rendered with so much love and care even if some of what we see are extremely speculative at best.
Other than that, I don't know what else to say about this episode. It's nearly perfect. I guess it would be great to have even more creatures, but time and budget will always be an issue. This could very well be my favorite episode.
