Discussion: Alt text

Discussion: Alt text

Hi! I'm new to Spacehey/Neocities/The awesome underground world of recreating the old web!
Anyways, as I started collecting stamps to put on my spacehey page, I noticed that not a lot of stamps had alt text which I thought was an interesting topic for discussion!

Personally, I really like alt text! Not only do I think it could be helpful for people who use screen readers or might not have images loaded because of slow connections, but alt text also gives a chance to add additional context or a joke to an image, for example:

A computer from Ye Olden Days with the caption: I love old web. This stamp's alt text is: "A computer from Ye Olden Days with the caption: I love old web" which uses the phrase "Ye Olden Days" to add humor to the description.

Pipis Person, a reference to Deltarune character Spamton G. Spamton. While this stamp's alt text adds context to the image: "Pipis Person, a reference to Deltarune character Spamton G. Spamton" by explaining what the reference is from.

But these are just my thoughts and I wanna hear yours! Please leave a comment on why you do or don't add alt text to images, I think this could be a really informative discussion!

I try to add alt text when I can. Thankfully spacehey makes it easy, as the "description" field puts in the alt text html stuff for you. I always add it just in case anyone with a screen reader is viewing my stuff, plus my image links will probably die someday so when the image breaks and only the alt text is displayed future people will at least know wtf I was talking about.

You know last night during an Insomnia Moment I was thinking about alt text and AI. Like, imagine if AI was used for good and websites did this thing where if users didnt input alt text by hand, then an AI would like scan the image and generate its own alt text? You know, just something that could potentially be better than nothing. Now, whether any company could be trusted to employ an AI like that without storing the images it scans...
