spacehey needs to do something about their predator problem

crossposted from my tumblr. feel free to share this blog as this is an increasing issue and its time to speak up.

i need to figure out why spacehey isnt age gating their site by now? all the kids running to the site from tiktok has created an epidemic of pedophiles on the site who go for kids under the age of 16, who keep (allegedly) returning under new accounts despite being banned, (allegedly since we're unsure if its the same person, but either way, they're preying on children both publicly and in IMS) if you're not gonna implement an age gate, at least work with the authorities to get these people locked up, your platform is getting bigger, its time to either
1. look out for the kids on your site or 2. not let them on at all.

no matter how much me & other adults keep warning kids to not post thigh pictures & other lewd content they keep rebutting with "you can't tell me what to do" which is obviously bad because.. hello? we are telling you for a reason, and i know it sucks to be told what to do but its literally for your safety and we keep TELLING YOU its for your safety so why not listen before something bad happens?? it's just frustrating, and its not the kids fault, but at some point they should listen to us because um.. yeah, posting blogs titled "my sexy thighs" is obviously dangerous when your age is literally listed as FOURTEEN YEARS OLD. spacehey if you are namesearching your platform at all and come across this post, PLEASE make the platform 16+ or work with the authorities in some way because theres been several predators within the past week alone & kev (known pred) is back AGAIN under another alias despite being banned several times in the past 3 months. i'm so concerned & it sucks to everyone on the site seeing kids put themselves at risk, unable to do anything about it. i'm concerned that if this keeps up, itll lead to a lawsuit or cease & desist that will inevitably end in the shutdown of the site.

internet safety 101

DO NOT SHARE PERSONAL INFORMATION WITH ANYBODY YOU MEET ONLINE, this includes your school, general location, or where you frequent on the daily.

DO NOT LIST EVERYTHING ABOUT YOURSELF PUBLICLY this includes mental health related triggers, anything someone finds about you online can and WILL be used against you once somebody dislikes you enough, its happened to me, its happened to people i know.

THINK BEFORE YOU SHARE. does this information truly matter to anyone who isnt close to me? do i have any actual reason to share this information? am i only sharing it because others share it too? could this information potentially put me in a situation that can lead to online predation or cyberstalking?

BLOCK ANYONE WHO MAKES YOU UNCOMFORTABLE. seriously, if an adult is making romantic or sexual advances at you, you block them and tell a trusted adult IMMEDIATELY.

DO NOT SHARE LEGAL DOCUMENTS. i have seen more than enough times literal children sharing their birth certificates, school IDs, to prove something in the midst of drama, i have seen my own past friends do this and i cannot stress enough how dangerous this is. do not share ANY information that could be used as a form of identity theft, birth certs, ssns, ids, all fall under this category. the only time you should be showing that to anyone is if its a JOB APPLICATION.

TO ADULTS :

see something, say something. block and report anyone acting suspicious around minors. encourage kids around you to come to you for help if someone is making them feel uncomfortable or threatened. your voice matters and its one of the things that may lead to the arrest of someone attempting to harm a child.

i've made a blog about this a long time ago and i agree with mostly everything on this post, as someone who's been on the internet for a long time and has also been a victim several times the staff team really needs to lay the hammer down on these creeps, i don't think changing the age restrictions will work because even at my grown ass age of 17 i've had a lot of creepy DMs and interactions on this site with whole ass adults whom i've just blocked after the first creepy message.

I wish Spacehey was safer but nope, i barely ever see the mod team do their work and we really need to start implementing IP bans. it's sick and twisted how people on the internet try and take advantage of kids but also kids really really for the love of Athena need to stop sharing so much personal information :/

If they ban kids, then kids are going to sneak on and lie about their age and won't be able to talk about being hurt because theyre scared of being punished for rule breaking.
More moderation and response to reports? Obviously. Every website needs that. But you cant make the world safer for children by shutting them out from the world.
