For viewers of West Side Story, What's so appealing and attractive about the Jets?

This is just a curious question I'm asking for people who have watched any incarnation of West Side Story, be it the Stage Musical, 1961 and 2021 movies. The question I have is: Why are the jets so appealing and attractive to viewers despite their treatment and bigotry towards the sharks, not to mention what they try to do to Annita, which lead to the death of Tony? This question only pertains to people who viewed the stage musical and movie adaptations,so if you haven't viewed any of them skip this particular entry. Bonus question: If the sharks were given an equal amount of screamtime as the jets and were portrayed very fleshed out and nuanced, Do you believe viewers would favor the sharks a lot more?
