Btcc(British touring car championship) infodump!

!!OK SO, THIS IS ALL WE KNOW ABOUT THE BTCC (British touring car championship) IF WE GET ANYTHING WRONG PLEASE DO CORRECT US!!

It is a touring car racing series held each year at different race tracks across the uk it is currently organised and administered by TOCA. So the Btcc started back in 1958 and since then has attracted millions of fans across the uk and it’s original name was the British saloon car championship (bscc) and was then renamed as the British touring car championship (Btcc) in the 1987 season. By the eighties, btcc Was moving with the times and began to develop an international flavour (huh, this is from the btcc website btw idk why they put that.) the Mazda, Toyota and alfer Romeo were the first three winners of the decade as the championship continued to be run be several classes of car but the mighty ford RS500 and BMW M3 are most likely the 2 most dominant models of the time. But in the nineties that was when it truly boomed it got regular coverage on BBC’s popular sports show ‘grandstand’. Then the decision was made to make the btcc exculsively for the 2 Liter cars, it the quickly created closer racing and attracted high profile manufacturers to come make teams and bring drives to the series. This then made the btcc essential viewing for millions across the uk- and some even world wide. Trackside crow figures can sometimes hit the mark of 40,000 as it went to some Scotland and wales tracks. This made the social element of the sport become important, ther was no substitute for ‘being there’. Surprisingly few other sports have seen a rapid growth in popularity. Some of the manufacturers that have/are involved in the btcc are: Alfa Romeo, Audi, ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Toyota, Vauxhall and Volvo. The key of the btcc success has been the potential for independently-run teams to face off against major manufacturers on a level playing field without the need for factory support, as proven by ash Suttons title triumph with laser tools racing back in 2020 (wow not that long ago thinking about it) it now has unpredicted levels of national tv coverage, itv has agreed for a long term contract up until 2026 (not long now fingers crossed they keep it on itv or even add it to other channels!)

Tysm for reading this! One of our first ever times speaking about this online, as it is one of our special interests so it’s nice to talk about it!
