So chances are you already know the cure, Bauhaus, SoM, Siouxsie, etc. I wasn’t actually a goth when i came across the music I’m about to describe until I got an active interest in the subculture, but a lot of this music is dark wave, cold wave, or postpunk in any other manner. A lot of it is on YouTube, but Morbidi I Mnoći recently uploaded some music to Spotify!
1 - Morbidi I Mnoći
Favourite song: Put
MiM were a shortlived band from Yugoslavia in the 80s, who have 1 live performance available and some remasters by the bassist, Mario Surjan. They have some really dirty beats, with corrupted audio at times making it sound even cooler, along with their haunting voices. It’s a 10/10 performance.
2 - Romantične Boje
Favourite song: Tišina
They’re much more on the synth pop side of things, but they’re definitely worth checking out just for the sake of Zoran’ chilling voice and the band’s mournful, fantastical lyrics. They would’ve had a much more flourishing career if it wasn’t for the record company cutting their demos, but what’s left of the discography is great. San & Dead Rose’s Dream are also hits.
3 - Aurat (pronounced oh-rut)
Favourite song: Saanp
They’re a cultural breath of fresh air when it comes to what’s otherwise a hugely western subculture, as they’re an Urdu-speaking band. They weave traditional music and industrial sounds and their album Khaar is great (and it won’t take up too much of your time). Aseka has such fiery, raging vocals which shine through on songs like Sharminda, so you have no excuse to give them your time and money!
4 - Max & Intro
Favourite song: Beogradska Devojka
(Another Serbian entry wow) Max Vincent’s producing abilities were brilliant, and so were the songs he and Intro Johnnie made. They’re pretty industrial, but otherwise excellent evil synthpop.
