Internet is a big historic invention that came in 20th century, and developed in a form as we know it nowadays. In earlier years, a few countries knew about internet, and it was invented for the most simpliest thing – sending messages faster. But as it was more popular in more countries, it started to develop fast, as technology developed fast too. The increased number of users of the internet has made the first World Wide Web and Wikipedia, and with it the most earliest websites that promoted companies, held function to communicate with one another, showed many pictures, sold things online. Now, we have access to the same things, but in a much different form.
As more functions came to the present-day internet, life has become much easier to manage. The most useful thing that developed on internet is fast-checking information. As I mentioned earlier, Wikipedia was the one of the first websites that had information one click away, and nowadays there is many more websites like Wikipedia where it is possible to check the information right away. The searching for the websites has developed much faster, because other than Google, there are many more search engines that can help us find the exact information we need quickly. Other than that, the most popular thing on the internet are social medias. From simply sending emails to publishing statuses, pictures, videos, comments and giving likes, social medias are there to connect people from around the world. As we can check the information fast, we can communicate to people fast too. The first website social media that got popular in most countries was MySpace, then Facebook came, and now we have many other social medias that come in an app form, such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitter etc... As social medias are fun to use, there are many other fun things that can be searched for on internet. Entertainment on internet came with social medias, you don’t have to go to the cinema to watch a movie or go to the store to buy a video game, you can just look it up online and download it. Internet can be practical too, as you can buy something without going to the store, or make appointments wherever you want to go.
Althought, as much as we love internet, there has to be a dark side to it. The internet in the past had more few problems than today, the biggest problem of the nineties were viruses and malwares. But today, that problem is the least one we can think of on the internet, because technology has developed so much, and is developing faster than we think. The social medias had an evolution, nowadays can be found many ads, many suspicious user accounts that either seem controled by human or a bot and many misinformations. Today, it is much easier to be tricked because even phishers developed their tactics to steal everything from you and move on to the next victim. You can be kidnapped too, if you aren’t careful to whom you are telling your personal information. As we go deeper, the „pop-ups“ that we knew in the nineties and two-tousands are almost everywhere, and they are the first sign if the website is safe or not. They can even be masked into a regular ad on the social media. The more we go with the nowaday’s community that uses internet is more toxic than before. „Toxic“ users can be described as the most hateful users on the internet, that even can scam you into bigger problems than just viruses or looting. They can be hypocritical and make you think they are the best friend you ever had, but all they are thinking about you is bad intention. Other users can just break your feelings, and write hurtful things in the comments or messages, or even accuse you of something you never did. Also focusing more on games and communicating online can pull you into a big addiction that later on hardly can be fixed, and even can cause physical health problems such as bad posture, bad sleep-schendule, bad hygiene. Mental illnesses can be caused too, either from toxic users or addiction. Nowadays, the number of diagnosed individuals with depression is higher than ever in world history, after depression comes anxiety and many other mental disorders too.
In conclusion, the early internet developed many functions and many problems with it too, which means it is a very contradictory topic that can divide people. In my opinion, people should be very careful what they are doing on internet, because internet has become our reality that can’t be escaped like it could in the nineties. You can use internet for useful things, but abusing it or using it for too much time can lead you to the worst things that can ever happen in your life. The message for the end: Be safe and use it smart.
