Digital Hygiene

Why is public internet-safety so bad? It's stunted and ineffective. I saw a poster at my high school that said "How to stay safe on the internet: no social media!", while every single student at that school uses it. The people behind these PSA's are so hopelessly in the dark that their efforts are totally wasted.

We don't have a concept of what is healthy and unhealthy internet usage, it's just kind of publically accepted that if you don't have anything else immediately needing your attention, that you reach for your phone. And there you are so completely bombarded with content that you won't remember the bulk of what you just saw.
And this is the default state!

People used to come to school just because they had nothing else to do on a Wednesday, but now they can stay home and absorb the endless stream of content the internet offers, and get overstimulated and feel like shit and become so exhausted from it all that they don't have enough energy to come to school the next day, and the cycle continues.

We need to develop some concept of digital hygiene, what kind of usage is healthy and how much is too much, to develop some sort of stigma and guideline around media consumption because we're getting to a genuinely dangerous point. Don't people realize that too much information is bad for your health just like too much sugar, that you get addicted to stimulation just like you get addicted to drugs?

We are so tightly wound, so constantly bombarded with new content, that thinking at all becomes exhausting. No wonder people are so much less happy. And the authorities that exist are either bound by profit-incentive to keep this cycle going, faster and faster, or they're too inept and out of touch to even really understand the phenomenon, or how hopeless it is to just say "don't use social media" when our entire social landscape has shifted.

Hopefully these new authorities will come out of my generation, because I don't see them coming out of anywhere else. The information superhighway has no speed limit, doesn't anybody else see how completely insane that is? And we're letting toddlers drive on it! That's fucked up! And there is absolutely no stigma around it!
