another poem! i wrote this one based on a trip to paris with my school years ago, and my arch-rival. i hope you like the cover image, too!
It is only when
you finally stop acting so stuck up -
when you race me through a shopping centre in Paris,
our shoes failing to grip on the polished floor -
that I think maybe
I was too hard on you.
It is only when
I make you laugh
as we sit on the curb opposite the market,
passing a too-expensive
bottle of water between us,
that I think maybe
I was just afraid
of you taking her
from me.
It is only when
you grin empty threats and reluctantly pose
after being forced into a princess dress
in a French toy-shop
that I think maybe
I was wrong about you
all along.
But...
It is when,
after returning to school as
almost-friends,
when you turn to your
actual friends
with an evil smirk that dissolves
into harsh laughter
as I smile at you in the corridor,
that I know for certain:
you are exactly
the person I always thought you were.

that's such a poignant emotional experience though. I've been there, it sucks when people are shitty of course, but it stings a lot more when you get to see glimpses of who they could have been in different circumstances
It sucked when it first happened, but we were so much better suited as rivals. I realised after that the only way a friendship would’ve worked would’ve been if we’d only known each other outside of school if that makes sense? :)
