Howdy y'all!
I've always wanted to write a weekly blog about something, so I decided to start a super hero senki one! I've yet to watch this week's episodes so I'm just writing an introduction for the shows I'll be talking about each week.
I'll be talking about Kamen Rider Geats, Ohsama Sentai Kingohger and Hirogaru Sky Precure!
Kamen Rider Geats
So far I am hot and cold with Geats. While I love how it takes on reality competition show tropes and integrated them into the narrative, I'll say the previous arc, the Jamato Grand Prix wasn't my cup of tea. I feel like it dragged on for too long and it was really grabbing me. I think Geats is at its best when Ace manages to outsmart a situation using a plan he's set up episodes ago, specially if they're related to his previous wishes he's made on the DSP.
Although I can see that last arc as some character development for Ace and the other riders, I just, didn't get the same feeling of enjoyment I've gotten from previous arcs. I, personally, think Geats isn't consistent, sometimes the use of its own setting is super messy, and sometimes its great and fun.
Regardless, I still think Neon, and women in the Kamen Rider universe, deserve to be better written and treated better by the narrative.
Ohsama Sentai Kingohger
I am so happy with how Kingohger is progressing so far. After Donbrothers I was worried going back to a regular, not insane but also amazingly written series would be hard but I'm loving it!
I understand there are many valid criticisms about it, like it's weird editing/pacing. I feel like characters teleport around scenes a LOT, not only when they travel from kingdom to kingdom, but just. Idk how ho describe it but, weird "jumps" from place to place and scene to scene that feel awkward and disjointed.
There's also the CGI, I think for it being a weekly show it's so far been great, but if I watch Sentai, and Tokusatsu for that matter, it's for it's use of practical effects. I am glad we're getting some of the best monster designs we've seen in a long while, but seeing so many CGI backgrounds is kinda, idk, boring? They don't look bad, I just really really like physical backgrounds and sets, they're more fun.
There's also the battle choreo, it looks "cool" but feels weirdly edited and, awkward. Again, if Kingohger has a consistent thing, it's how jumpy and disjointed it feels at times, specially during flashy fight scenes.
But. I fucking love the story and characters. I like how our Sentai team came together, how we've gotten to know each and every one of them, and their backgrounds and motivations. They all feel fun to hang around and see them bouncing with each other. Of course Rita is my favorite, because they're a joy to watch on screen every time, but I'll also give props to our maincharacter, Gira. I like how he's set himself up as the "tyrant king" that opposes the "rightful king" as his way to make some sort of revolution happen. That sort of character trope is one of my favorites. I love goofy characters trying so hard to make themselves look like villains. I eat that shit up every time.
Hirogaru Sky Precure
So, here's the thing. I've been enjoying Hirogaru. I think it's fine, actually that one episode with the baby shoes fucked me up real bad. It's got some very smart and nice storylines for some episodes. My issue with it is how uninterested in the antagonists I am. Listen, in theory I should've loved Kabaton, I love big burly pig men but he just didn't click with me. He had funny scenes it's not that he's obnoxious. He just felt so out of place. Like yeah he tried to kidnap the princess and kicked into motion the plot, but I have no idea WHY he's doing it. He's working for someone yeah, and we've been told about what the bad guy(s?) are trying to accomplish but, idk.
Is it weird of me to wish we've gotten more development or like, backstory to what the antagonists are even trying to do? I don't want them to reveal their cards right away but it also felt like Kabaton was just messing with the girls just because he needed to make a monster of the week appear? Like, again I don't mind him being goofy I just wish he was a little more prominent or like, properly introduced into the story.
Other than that, I love Sora. I love that she's a protagonist while also being the pink cure. I love her personality and her obsession with being a hero! Idk I just vibe with her. Everyone else bounces nicely with each other too. And also we got our first male cure! Chicken boy is a good egg.
Sky and Prism are a nice cure duo, and I can't wait to see what happens to them next.
So yeah that's it
I'll write my thoughts in this week's episode on our first proper blog entry for this series! Idk I know it's corny to be excited about a blog but I'm just happy to write. I love writing a whole bunch!
I'm in love with super hero senki and Precure, so let's see what this year offers us!
