So, a little context here, I love eurovision. It is a constant every year, thus a thing that has kept me going in my darkest moments. I don't tend to tell the adults in my life about that since they're not always very accepting, but I do tell them how important it is to me. My parents are away at the moment so I had to either watch the final alone or go with some family friends.
These family friends have already been close to being cut off by me and my parents - they are very oblivious, priveledge right wing people who refuse to admit their political affiliations. I don't always like being labelled left wing, not because I'm not (I very much am) but I don't like that my main interests (feminism, anti-discrimination, immigration) are simply about people being given basic human rights, I don't like that someone's life is political. Nonetheless, politics is something I leave behind for eurovision. They did not.
The entire evening was spent debating whether things were political or not. If Ukraine even got 1 point, it was apparently political. Because Abba's 50th anniversary is next year, if Sweden got points, it was because of that. There was some very obvious xenophobia seeping in. I reminded them multiple times that it is only truly political if you let it be political, as those who truly care about the politics of eurovision don't watch it.
"Why are they giving the points to Sweden? Were we not watching the same song?" As you, a reader, can tell, these are questions! Therefore, one would assume people would listen to an answer! I answer "the song has good musical structure and integrity, the lyrics make sense, it is good for its genre, she sings incredibly well (her and Lithuania were the only singers to feature resonance), she commands the stage and is comfortable there, and in general Sweden are a powerhouse at eurovision, she herself is a powerhouse at eurovision since she won in 2012." Then the question gets asked again. And again. And again.
It was so odd that the things that weren't political were made political, and vice versa. In my opinion, the televote points for Ukraine actually may have been political, since there hadn't been much buzz in the community about the song (general consensus was it's okay but I'd rather vote for someone else). No one mentioned a thing. But Ukraine getting a 12 points from a Jury? Political apparently!
It just really hurts that I had emphasised how much it means to me, that I just didn't want to be alone, and instead I had to spend 5 hours with people ridiculing it. It's obviously fine to not like something, but why invite me if you know I enjoy it that much?
I can't pick up my medication until tomorrow because pharmacies are closed on Sundays but I definitely will pick it up. Though it was hopefully a one-off yesterday, I felt so so angry. I couldn't control how loud I was, I was really struggling to not scream and swear, and the entire car journey home I was imagining killing them. It was so difficult, then when I got home I cried hysterically and cried myself to sleep.
When I cut off the main problematic family friend, I won't hold back on how I feel. I will tell her she is disrespectful, condescending and close minded. She is so paranoid that the media lie to her she should go to a doctor, as I have to keep on top of that as a symptom of my EUPD, which I am going to be given an anti-psychotic for. I will tell her that I know she will think I am overreacting, but this has built up for years and both my parents and another family friend feel the same about her.

people hate on loreen for no reason. the voting was not in her control and the rules were the same for EVERYONE in the contest. people using the ABBA excuse are just trying too hard to defend their favorite country this year, and they need to grow up and accept loreen won fair and square. tons of past winners try to compete again, and it is not unfair to the newer artists because all the returning winners (except for Johnny Logan and Loreen) did not win the contest the second time they competed. there is no bias towards loreen, and she doesn't deserve how people are treating her.
