Please forgive any spelling and grammar mistakes I am writing this in a blind rage. Also spoilers for Jane Eyer if you care about that.
I've been forced to read Jane Eyer for english and I'd like to preface this by saying that I read a comic version rather than the full novel for reasons I won't go into for the moment so it's possible I haven't seen the full intricasies of his character but I can't imagin a world where I like Mr Rochester.
If you don't know he's the main love interest and a complete ass. I first started to hate him for the way he speaks about Abele (his possibly? daughter). He is so dissmissive and condicending (which will be a theme). He treats her like some kind f pet rather than a human. Possibly worse since you'd hope most pet owners would have some affection towards their pet. Now don't get me wrong I'm not fond of chidren myself but the way he speaks about her as a mindless vapid creature who only cares about pressents rubs me the wrong way. Yeah she's not your intilectual equal dude she's like five.
This however is far from his wost crime. The way he courts Jane is far more heinous. He acts as though by virtue of his love she becomes a real worthwhile person, and I get that this reflects attatudes twords class at the time but man it still sucks. He's also incredibly manipulative. He admits to Jane that he was only pretending to like this other woman to make Jane jealous and it sucks knowing how she belitiled herself in comparison to her because of it.
Oh yeah also he locks his undisclosed wife in the attic. He claims it was because she was already crazy but I don't believe him for a second. Of couse being locked up with little human contact for god knows how long would make you violent towards your captour. And when Jane find out and wants to leave he threatens her with violence.
I don't think I'd find any of this nearly as offencive if she didn't MARRY HIM AT THE END. Jane Eyer is supposed to be this feminist book that takes all this time caricterising Jane as strong willed and independant only for her to end up taking care of some dude for the rest of her life. She makes such a big deal about how they can't be together and they need to live the rest of their lives apart but she hears him call out from the spirit realm one time and throws it all away!
I'm sure for the time having any woman who actually stands up to a man of a higher status no matter how hollow was revolutionary but I really don't think Jane Eyer aged very well.
also what is it with the Bronte sisters and incest
