Jawbreaker (1999): Sickeningly Sweet But Ultimately Flavorless (Spoiler Free!)

Jawbreaker (1999) Short Review:

Production/Critic: 7/10 (it's stylized and honestly not bad for the director's first movie but it doesn't have a concrete identity)

Own Enjoyment: 6.5/10 (it's an iconic watch but there's so much more that could've and should've been explored)

How much would I recommend it to others: 4.5/10 (it's a mid movie unfortunately but if you're into sapphic coded/feminist cult classics then it's kinda enjoyable)

Wikipedia synopsis: Jawbreaker is a 1999 American teen black comedy crime film directed and written by Darren Stein. The film stars Rose McGowanRebecca Gayheart, and Julie Benz as girls in an exclusive clique in their high school. Charlotte Ayanna has a non-speaking cameo role as the murdered fourth member of the group. The film was inspired by the 1988 film Heathers and is often compared to it, particularly the plot involving a popular female clique, the use of bright pastels, and the ostensibly accidental killing of one of its members. (My additions: Judy Greer plays the [un]forgettable wallflower Fern Mayo. Girlbosses Pam Grier and Carol Kane also star.)

Would I watch it again? Even though it wasn't the best, I would honestly watch it again. I enjoyed it less than I thought I would but somehow it's kind of captivating? This is mainly because of the awesome, awesome cast (Rose McGowan and Judy Greer were absolutely standouts!) and sometimes the script serves hard (Imma be real most of it is Rose McGowan again). I love the costuming for the "mean girls" (don't care if it's not accurate to high school), and the soundtrack is fantastic (great throwback and very Lindsay Lohan Freaky Friday vibes). Now what makes this movie so mid? Well, the issues stem from the editing, transitions, and pacing. The movie is only an hour and 25 minutes but when I was watching it it felt so long thanks to the editing and certain scenes. If it were longer by 20-30 minutes the movie would've been better as the audience would've spent more time with the characters that do matter/are interesting (like how certain characters rose to the top, more of how the high school reacts and the mystery/investigation behind the murder) and the plot would be better fleshed out (the concept itself is great but the execution was not that good). I liked most of the editing and transitions (very cheesy and somewhat camp) but with some changes (Idk what) it would make more of a statement rather than feel like production made those choices because it seemed cool/unique. It also doesn't help that a certain person in the cast (albeit a cameo) is a horrible person (cough cough Marilyn Manson cough cough), which made me feel kind of uncomfortable. I really do hope Jawbreaker gets a TV/movie remake because it has the potential to really cement itself as a strong cultural influence (commentary on high school, feminism, LGBTQ+ themes, etc.) like its cliquey sisters (Heathers and Mean Girls). However, if there will be a remake/reboot of any kind I really do want it to still be set in the '90s and just elaborate on what it already is, otherwise, it wouldn't really work (2018 Heathers says hi).
